hi, sorry to dive in with "SPOON FEED ME" thread. but there appears to be a tonne of conflicting information out there as to when the cutoff between d1 and d2 happened. some say 98, some say 99, but then there's cars out there which don't tally with either. like 3dr 99 reg with old type dash, seats, etc.

can someone clarify for me?

also, what can be swapped from the later "td5" style d2's onto the earlier d2's from like '99? can you use the nicer doors for example? or is the groove completely different so you'd have to change all the side panels? ie. could you make your own facelifted d2 out of an earlier one?

:)1998MY was the last D1, D2s were introduced with the 1999MY.

Can't help with the D2s body panels they all look the same to me. :)

d2 body is longer than a d1..main difference is in the boot length .

the last of the d1 s will have been sold and registered after the first of the d2s were sold.

The MY moniker stands for model year. The way these things go is that, for example, a 1998my is made with the spec for that year, then usually sold that year. But quite often vehicles aren't sold for a year or two, even longer sometimes after they're made. So you're usually going to get a bit of blurring at the edges.

As for the facelift TD5 Disco, pretty much all the bodywork is the same as the earlier TD5 as far as I'm aware. There are different trim levels for each which may mean the panels have different kit on, but that's about all. Except for that front. You can, I believe still get kits to alter the earlier TD5 to look like a later one, with the headlights and so on but thay aren't cheap and there is a bit of metal cutting to be done I believe.

New vehicles are also sold in the previous year of their model year hence 2013MY vehicles on the road today.

In 1998 both the last D1s and new D2s were side by side in the yard of LR main dealer I used, although there were only a few D1s waiting for their buyers because of the discounting on the 1998MY D1 in late 1997 early 1998 to sell them off, all the rest were D2s.

so what is the definitive sign of a D2?

Rear lights are bigger and higher, door handles are completely different, bonnet, wings and doors are all different rear suspension is completely different, rear over hang is longer, plastic bumpers, diesels are all td5 not tdi, how many do you want:D

so what is the definitive sign of a D2?

D2s have a raised loop and press button style door handle D1s have a black flush plate style handle.
The rear lights are high level on a D2 and just above the bumper on a D1.
The front is all plastic on a D2, D1s still have a steel bumper showing with plastic end caps... classic :D

According to sales literature at the time, the only common panel between D1 and D2 was the tailgate......

Very easy way to tell them apart from the outside is that D2 alpine windows are bonded; D1 are in rubber surrounds.

So to recap:

A 200tdi is an original Discovery1.
A 300tdi is a facelifted Discovery1
A TD5 is a Discovery2
A TD5 after 2002 is a facelifted Discovery 2
A Discovery3 is the more square newer ones
A Discovery4 is an updated Discovery3.

Just look at pictures either on here, or ones on ebay or in the street, you'll get the hang of which one you're seeing.

(He'll probably go and buy an L200 or something now).

i have been looking it's just that there's even info out there saying that anything after late 95 "is a d2"... this is why i came to this forum (the proper place) for clarification as i'd started out thinking like has been put above. new handles, higher lights, etc is d2.

turns out i was right, and then mislead.

cheers folks, now i know for certain.

no l200 in my future, i need a proper boot.... and theyre ghastly

got a merc to offload before i can buy though

That comes from pillocks calling a facelift D1 a D2!

so the td5 and the new door handles etc are the d2. and those late 300 tdi's are in fact still d1s?

yes! there is an overlap, one of my customers had a d1 on a w reg, its just what stock landrover had kicking about, if you look at em side by side there is a big difference between d1 and d2, panels and the engine, d2 face lift is mainly trim, new lights front and rear and the front bumper, not a real difference in much other items, all panels are the same
some people preffered the d1 300tdi above the d2 td5, horses for course's, everybody is different
