I'm looking for someone that can take a look at my landy currently on a mates drive in Yelvertoft Northampton.

The short story is she was running until we removed the manifold to attempt to re-tap the outlet manifold to stop it blowing..... that was it, now nothing (well everything apart from starting)

I need to get the landy running so I can get the mot and bring her home to Kent.

If someone could take a look (or recommend someone) and give me a price it would be a great help.....

Thanks Andy

Couldn't recommend anybody but are you sure you ain't broken a wire going to the starter motor as it's near the down pipe, also check the starter solenoid.

morning all!

She is spinning over and from what I can recall we have a strong spark (should do as everything has been changed plugs points ht leads coil etc) I think its just fuelling (but yes we have wet plugs)
I'm sure it wouldn’t be a big job to get her running as
a) she was running
b) she was running with all the new bits so they should be ok
c) She stopped running after the carb was disturbed so I would guess that’s the main area to look.

The only problem is she is 125 miles away from where I live, that's why a mobile mechanic would be worth a couple of quid just to get her running and I could book her in for a mot....

I'm open to all suggestions so please keep them coming, going up with a list of the most likely things to check could speed the process up greatly!

Thanks Andy

Call the AA? I've at times had a problem with my car that I couldn't diagnose so I just drove my car a little bit from home then called the AA. They told me what was wrong

hi,
thought of that but it has to have road tax before they will look at it :-(

If it had a mot and tax I could pay someone to trailer it home and i could work on it in the street at me leisure.

Nothing is easy but by the time ive finished it will be a new motor LOL

Thanks for the suggestion :)

My starting point would be drain carbs. Remove plugs clean and dry. Then try and start with full battery and foot to the floor so it don't overfill as you have everything there so I'm guessing its just badly flooded.

So what exactly have you removed then put back
And what exact engine we talking

p { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line-height: 120%; }

ok 2 ΒΌ 3 bearing 1970 1971 petrol engine

She has been standing for about 4 or 5 years, went up in the latter part of last year and fitted new plugs points condenser rotor arm distribute cap coil ht leads plugs and battery. Had to dump a cap full of petrol in the top of the carb but with a few spins she fired up on most cylinders... Slight issue idling but was running enough for a blast down a country lane.

When she came back she was a bit lighter due to loosing half of the exhaust now missing.

New exhaust fitted and due to a broken stud in the manifold it was decided to attempt a repair. Exhaust manifold re-tapped car re seated and everything bolted back together but now nothing happening re firing or running, even with a cap full of fuel in the top of the carb

all I can think of now is a electronic ignition and or a new carb... But she was running with them before ?!?!?!

is you manifold like this

attachment.php

If so did you split it
Was the inlet gasket spot on when refitted

Im going air leak
Or as said flooding, something adrift on carb, float slick after beening moved about

As some one said dry it all out and try again
Can you tow start it

Just a couple of ideas :)

Are you getting a vacuum at the carb?

Did you replace the manifold gaskets with new or did you take a chance on the old ones?

Did you replace the heat insulation block between the carb and the manifold?

If you put your hand over the top of the carb and turn the engine over how hard does it try to suck your hand through?

How strong is your spark?

Have you checked the timing?

Evening All...

Just ending this thread on a high note!

Just got back from Northampton and have worked what was wrong with the landy... New outlet manifold and gaskets all round, reset the engine timing and point and she burst into life!

OK wouldn’t start again, the points they had moved, re set and she run, turned off and same issue when trying to re start............. But she was running !!!!

Will pop a new thread in about the best replacement distributor to fit but shouldn’t be long before MOT time now !!

Many thanks for all your thought and suggestions!

I think RKServicing on here is in that part of the world - met him once and he seemed a nice helpful chap - he might be able to help you out...

You could also try IAWA - Ian runs the place and is a great, vey knowledgable guy - i think he has a trailer in his yard so could probably collect it for you if he couldn't offer on-site maintenance. He's done endless work on my D3 for me and will be doing my swivels on the Series in the near future.

does it have a ducellier distributor or lucas distributor?

ducellier- cap is round with a flatter top where the plug leads attach, and has sliding points.

lucas- cap is round with a domed top where the plug leads attach, and has fixed points on a sliding baseplate.

lucas is better of the two, duceliier can give symptoms you describe.

edit-
how worn is the spindle bearings in the distributor? does it wiggle side to side?
