I own a '94 300 Tdi and from what I've read on the net in the last week or so I am lead to believe my Discovery should not only have tail lights in the bumper but also in the rear light cluster.

I got into the cluster (a major undertaking because of fold up seats in the boot) and although there are the required holes for said bulb there is no fixture for the bulb to sit in.

Did my Discovery originally have two sets of tail lights and how easy is it to fit a second tail light into the main cluster?

Depends when it was built. Originally the 300 series had indicators in the bumper only, then by popular demand they put them in the main clusters, then I believe they were breaking some law, so had to stop fitting them, I think Isuzu had similar problems.
I believe it is one of those obscure bits of legistation that prevent the manufacturer fitting 2 sets of indicators (all though it seems to be legal on commercials) but there is nothing to stop the owner fitting them after registration! Thats why they still fitted the apropirate lamp units, the owner just has to get bulb holders & bulbs.

I eventually got off my bum and went to scrap yard and bought a pair of bulb holders yet when I went to fit them the spaces for them appear to have some form of blanking plate fitted!

How do you remove them as they don't look permanent?

Have a search on the forum I'm sure I read somebody had a 200tdi with indicators in the main light cluster, and a 300tdi without. He took the 200 light cluster and plugged it into the 300 and it worked fine. Like I say though search the forum to make sure, I could be imagining it or sommat.

This has been done recently by the Dave (thebiglad) he purchased new tail lamps for his 98 disco so now he has indicators and tail lights are in the body and also the bumper.
While my 97 model came with that set up as standard.

One of my 300 Tdi's has only indicators in the bumper and a blanking piece in the ones on the body cluster, the others came with indicators on all sets. The Land Rover Supermarket in Liverpool sell clusters to add to your car with the indicator bit for ya. I think it's Land Rover Spare Parts & Accessories

Notanadikt666 strikes again  :D

Hey, if i'm readin this right, this was the topic of me first post! :D

all it needs is a little mod of the rear light cluster, afew wire splices, and twin filament bulbs (like any other vehicle), rather than using that other gap (which was for indicators, LR just changed the outside lens colour).

i seem to remember i had to cut one of the metal tabs to stop the other filament track earthing immediatly on the cluster (theres ALL earthed together with a metal track)

heres the thread i was pointed too: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/rear-lights-38310.html

Hi
I changed my back lights last month on my disco and this is how my lights were wired up, the wire that as been solded on to the top bulb was then scothbocked onto the live wire of the light in the bumper. All as worked will for the last 5 years.;)

Judging by what I see when I've followed other Discos the same age as mine the circled space is where a second tail light bulb is/can be fitted. As is visible on this pic it appears to be blanked off, can this be removed so bulb and holder can be fitted?

ps this is for tail light not indicator.

The top bulb holder as a twin filament bulbs in it and the soldered wire then joins onto the rear tail light in the bumper to give you an extra tail light on the body work, the blanked off part is not used. I have just up graded my Disco to have extra indicators on the body work this is how I found out this I got a pair of rear lights of fleabay with indicators on and just joined the top light to the tail light in the bumper and put a new wire on the new indicator in the middle to the indicator on the bumper. The wires for both of these are just in side the body work so there is no need to do any drilling just crip them on and away you go.

I have just had a look at my old lights and it looks like that you could just knock out the blanking plate and put a bulb holder in there but you would need a live feed to it, it would have to be a spade fitting on the blue line or soldered onto the red line.Hope this helps.;)
