To update this thread l had a new exhaust manifold fitted at the garage, and replaced the broken handbrake cable myself.

Hope the new one doesn't go the way of the old one!
Advice generally is to cut away the webs between the branches of the manifold.

Thanks yes the garage cut away the webs on the new manifold as recommended
