This looks like a bigger problem.

The later cars/300tdi have a timer relay that provides power to the glow plugs, the earlier cars relied on a spring in the ignition lock.

Post a picture of the fuses infront of the gearstick ...
Thanks! That makes sense.

Here is a photo of fuses as mentioned. Really appreciate this help! Slow response as been away working for a few days.

Yes it is severly deteriorated as shown by the cracks / delamination etc.
Gates or Dayco are the only ones really, everything else is total pants.
Be sure to change the tensioner and idler pulleys at the same time, its not a lot of money.
Check the idlers with the belt of give em a spin if you hear anything replace them, the other pulleys give them a wobble much the same as checking wheel bearings on normal car.
Only takes a few miles of no belt and then potential goodby engine, so makes sense to get good ones.
Allmakes, terrafirma, bearmach all the same stuff and total garbage!
Thanks I have ordered all Dayco replacements. Cheers for the heads up.

The damage may not have happened inside the car. If I know anything about scrap yards it'll have been yanked out of the donor vehicle with a forklift or telehandler, and been lying around the yard with people driving into it or over it for a while. You've only got to look at the state of the secondhand engines depicted on Ebay!

My 300tdi doesnt have a Glowplug relay either. Just a push switch (possibly off a series), and I very rarely needed to use it.
