Hi folks.

Great to back here after 12 years not having a Land Rover!

I have recently acquired this Land Rover and it cut out and had to be towed on its way back. I initially thought the auxiliary belt had come off although the main auxiliary drive belt seems to be ok ( will replace anyway).

Question is - which belt is missing here and what does it do?

In addition - am I right to think this is the earlier version of the 300tdi?

Thanks in advance!

Stu

i spotted the same on my 300tdi , but i assume its to run another auxiliary belt for an aircon pump or the like or another option not fitted to mine. i just assume they use a generic pulley for all models.
yours is also like mine in that its missing the viscous fan of the end of the pulley.

It's an odd layout, more 200tdi than 300tdi.
A 300tdi shoved into a 200tdi engine bay.
It's not 'missing a belt'.
The snake belt is fucked - change it asap.
The main fuse box is missing ...
The timing cover is broken (big hole in it).
Where is the air filter ?
Where is the glow plug timer/relay ?
Is that the engine breather poking forward under the heater hoses ?

Is that the air intake just heading to the back of the engine bay past the heater block? As said above "where is the air filter? " The hole in the front cover needs a cover of some sort or a replacement to prevent contamination of cam belt.

the belt in the pictures is a very long way from being ok!

Thanks! Yes it came with a replacement cover I will get on ASAP. The air intake was off to be replaced and cleaned and protected. Cheers!

Thanks. Really useful for me to look into what you have pointed out here. I have taken the air filter housing off to be cleaned and replaced. I will look into what it means to have a missing fuse box and glow plug/timer relay. I didn’t know much about it when I got it but it was only 2.9k and allows me to chip away at fixing it up.

How do you start the engine?
Turn the key until a spring resistance is felt, count to 10 and then turn to start or turn until the orange heater light goes off and then start ?

The first of the two. Although to be honest hadn’t given it too much thought. Turn the key, wait a while and then start.

The later cars/300tdi have a timer relay that provides power to the glow plugs, the earlier cars relied on a spring in the ignition lock.

Post a picture of the fuses infront of the gearstick ...

300 disco engines can have two lengths of main accessory belt, the difference is to do with the dia of the alternator pulley, later 300 had a higher output alternator, with I think a smaller dia pulley.
On the 300 there is a chance you might have a dodgy cambelt set up, so well worth keeping an eye on the lower timing case drain hole for black belt dust.
You will have to ask yourself, if the acc belt is shagged what is the cambelt like?

How did they break the timing case cover?

Is that because of the cracks or for another reason too? Thanks!
Yes it is severly deteriorated as shown by the cracks / delamination etc.
Gates or Dayco are the only ones really, everything else is total pants.
Be sure to change the tensioner and idler pulleys at the same time, its not a lot of money.
Check the idlers with the belt of give em a spin if you hear anything replace them, the other pulleys give them a wobble much the same as checking wheel bearings on normal car.
Only takes a few miles of no belt and then potential goodby engine, so makes sense to get good ones.
Allmakes, terrafirma, bearmach all the same stuff and total garbage!

A pre tdi truck will have all the fuses in the cab and no glow relay. Air intake will be in the near side wing.
My 1990 Ninety now with 200tdi is like this.
