Hi everyone...I have a Series 2A 2.25 petrol that misfires when hot. We rebuilt the distributor a few days ago...reset the points, checked everything...cleaned it all up pretty and it run like a stallion for 2 days...now she is back to her old ways. Cap is new, points are new, condenser is new and wires are new. Could it be the coil? While using the existing negative earth points/condenser...can I use a new non ballast 12v coil? Could it be a relay switch? Let me know what you think, thanks alot,
Mark

Hi Mark, I replied to your pm, might be worth you copying and pasting it here on the thread, there are a few of us with good knowledge of ignition systems, that said elastictrickery faults are the worst kind.

If its a ballast resistor type coil then yes you could convert to a standard one, allthough you'd need to do a bit or wiring, maybe I'm wrong but I thought ballasted coils were popular in colder countries to give the engine a better chance of firing, still your truck could have come from anywhere I spose.

I had similar problem. It wasn't electrics - turned out to be carburettor that needed a service. Been perfect ever since.

Steve...I am not sure where you are located...but do you ever have issues with the carb getting hot? as it is located over the exhaust manifold? Mine only does this when it is hot...never cold. Was yours the same way?
Thanks,
Mark

Mine used to be fine when cold but after running for a while it would just stop for no obvious reason. It would not start again untill engine cooled down. It wasnt the carb that was overheating; just that the engine was hot.
I tested all the electrics which proved to be fine but still would not start.
I decided that if not electrical it was probebly fuel related. I got a carburettor service kit (gaskets, diaphragm and needle and float valve etc) stripped it cleaned it with air jet rebuilt and fitted. Its been perfect ever since.. Dont understand why but hey - fixed!

used to have the same with a mini, the fuel was getting too hot in the float, fitted a heat shield and hey presto end of problem.

MISFIRING WHEN HOT - V8
Hi...... it turns out it was the ballast resistor, as I bypassed the resistor and the engine ran....even when letting go of the Key! I bought a new one, fitted it and THOUGHT ok problem solved! I took it out and it ran perfectly, started with no choke, and accelerated smoothly upto 75mph .... just touching the accelerator!

As it was running fine I thought I'd take it down the hill, and under the train tunnell...so I could hear the V8!! it seemed as though it was cured.... but when i turned round to go back, after the tunnell it was like it suddenly dropped four of its cylinders..... and drove like a sack of sh#te! struggling to do above 30mph!..... even when it crawled back to its parking place..... it seemed like it was only on 5 or 6 cylinders.... I could see nothing shorting out, and the coil was not warm........ so I still have the original fault, I can use it 'cold' to the shops... and thats about it!
..... any ideas please?
