ok so having gone from a tricked up fender and then to a rr bobtail im now considering buying a disco to mod up,ive found one at a reasonable price its a 300 tdi xs model

it has 235,000 miles on it and im guessing the engine is original
should i discount this disco altogether and look for a lower mileage model
all im gonna use it for is pay n play and laneing ,what sort of mileage are your discos on?

it has been owned by a local garage mechanic for the last 5 years its just got 1 years mot and 4 months tax on it

let me know yr thoughts ta

Have a drive then, as long as its running ok and its not going to fail any MOT on rotten areas for a few years it should be alright depending on price

Just waxoyl or underseal the **** out of it to try and prolong its life

A disco???

why? what are you after to go for a disco? is it the confort? the interiors?

As you know I had a disco before, which was a bit tricked up, and I wouldnt go back to one after owning the 90...

if its to be used for pay and play and greenlaning, Defender everyday, the disco just doesnt feel right as a toy, its all too nice inside.

and the 90 is better offroad than the disco, plus the defender is a lot easier to work on than the disco.
there's less places of rust on the 90, less places where mud can be trapped, its a lot easier to wash the chassi on the 90...

the list goes on and on...

just bought mine last week with 185000 on it drives sweet as a nut and a years ticket on it,and theres very little wear in interior,so its just ready for some abuse i think..

purely to be used as a toy and after the sale of the rr with whats left a 90 is right out of my budget all i will get is an old dog that needs loads of work, dont mind adding goodies but been there and done the whole rebuilding/painting thing
the disco is no harder to work on than the fender weve done enough on my m8s..its purely a financial decision

For what it's worth,
I sold my 300tdi today, 190,000miles, 12 month mot and tax, £1250.

Got myself a Td5 last weekend.

Defender is a different car altogether, wholly due to price.

You're not gonna get a ****about defender cos your into 5k for a decent 90 before you've even started.

Back on topic, rust affects discos, nothing else. Land rovers are not bothered by mileage. Anything that wears out has already been replaced, even the gearbox will have been rebuilt. Obviously the wheel bearings have been done many a time, and the Diffs maybe also.

What I'm saying is that I wouldnt worry about a high mileage land rover cos whether its done 100k or 300k it's still gonna leak oil, need wheel bearings soon, need a timing belt, etc etc

Worry not about 235k, it makes no odds really :)

fanks mr n sort of sums it up really:D

For most vehicles its time and not use that does a good part of the damage.

A '95 Disco with 30k on it would of rusted at the same rate as a 100k Disco. If left in the same conditions.

The 30k could of just done work down at the local quarry and so has dust and dirt/grit in every bearing and has been thrashed all over the place, the 100k one might of been cared for and serviced regularly and cleaned every week and just done commuting.

So I never look at vehicles based on their mileage, I go on a gut feeling based on all the data I have at the time.
