Sorry lads, just got back in. Will definitely get a gas bottle then. Not doing a lot of welding, Thor. New plate on each end of gearbox X member, about 40cm each end? Then a small amount of welding on the rear tub support tubes. Estimate 1.2m of linear weld. Via Amazon I've bought 0.6mm steel/copper covered wire and a box of 0.6mm tips to match. Another mate in the pub tonight said he would drop off a CO2 bottle tomorrow, from his welder. So I'm hoping I'm sorted for that amount of welding.

Have you looked at whether you need to change the polarity of the wires in the cabinet?

You say your friend ran it without gas last time he used it.

On mine if I use it as a NO GAS I need to swap the polarity of the wires in the cabinet from where they are when I run it with GAS. ( not sure if this needs doing on all migs)

Some migs you can't, for Gasless I think you need the torch to be negative and the clamp positive. For gas live torch and -ve clamp

Gas/Gasless migs normally have them arranged in such a way that you can just turn a switch or swap some wires inside the machine. I have no idea if you can make a dedicated gas mig into a Gasless machine

I'm welding bits of plate, I have cut out of the side of the chassis rails, on to the gearbox X member (grinding off old ones)
The set up I have is as per picture

I now have a bottle of CO2 with a regulator, so sorted for gas. 0.6mm steel wire and matching tips

I'm not sure waht will be visible on the picture when I post this, but basically it has:
A dial with a 0-10 scale
a rocker switch with 1 or 2 options
a rocker switch with min or max options

What should I set it to?

you need to test it by welding to determine that, as it could be worn out, blah blah

it goes min1, min2, max1, max2 highest setting max2.

dial is the speed of the wire, if it's too fast it'll push you away and you'll have a big glob of weld. too low and the wire will just blob on the tip.

you also need to set the gas flowrate so it shields nice, but not too high it's a waste.

for 2 mm on that machine, i'd prolly try max2 on speed 6 and change from there.

oh, but i'm no mig expert by any means! but i'm sure i'll be corrected if more experienced disagree ;)

Yeah totally, leave both hands free and you can line everything up then zap and it darkens.

Was cacking it when I first used one and shut my eyes tho lol
