I've borrowed a mig gas welder from a mate. Haven't seen him in ages, but he doesn't use it.
There isn't a gas bottle with it, so I asked him about the set up. He replied by saying he didn't use the gas the last time he used it and he got a better weld than with

I'm presuming this can't be right. You can get small bottles off Amazon for about £17 and regulators for about £12

Any welders out there, who can shed some light please?

Err if it is Gasless wire then that will work (needs to be a Gasless machine to though)

If it's a proper MIG then it needs gas to shield the weld or they will be weak and porous.

I find Argon is most expensive but I seem to get the smoothest welds with it compared to co2

Post up details of your machine and we can advise more

newbie mig welder here too.

I get my argon mix from Adams gas. no contract.

I just upgraded from 9Litre to 20litre - almost 4x as much gas than 9Litre. :)

I have a long term contract with boc and pay £25 for a full size bottle :D
I hate airproducts:mad:

yes, contracts are the cheapest.
But I don't think (hope !!!) I'll be using enough gas to need one.

but.........you never know.

what are the 'cancel' terms like for contracts ??

you will use 3-4 amazon bottles they don't last long. How much welding you got to do.

Adams 20litre @ 200bar is 58+vat for refills.

I've got both inner wings to sort out at present.

see my rust, welding and numpty thread.....

haven't looked at boot yet.

plus I've been doing a load of practicing. :)

Forgive my ignorance but can I not use arc to weld chassis ? Body panels I know you can blow holes in with one but on thicker steel will it not work as well? (Hangs head in shame at lack of research)

Tell me about it! Tried it on a few things! (Not my baby yet) looking at it it also seems its cheaper and less complicated to go stick than gas? Can get an Arc for not much money and no issues with buying bottles? I appreciate there is obvious advantages to MIG but for a novice is Gas the best solution? (Runs away and hides in case of potential abuse)

yes anything can be done with skill but generally even the best clean bits are still rusty on the inside and you cant melt a 2 mm rod if steels 1mm without holes

i always preferred gas torch with a filler stick, get a good pool going and penetration is excellent. it can be varied accurately so as not to hole material.

not done any for a good few years though

Sorry lads, just got back in. Will definitely get a gas bottle then. Not doing a lot of welding, Thor. New plate on each end of gearbox X member, about 40cm each end? Then a small amount of welding on the rear tub support tubes. Estimate 1.2m of linear weld. Via Amazon I've bought 0.6mm steel/copper covered wire and a box of 0.6mm tips to match. Another mate in the pub tonight said he would drop off a CO2 bottle tomorrow, from his welder. So I'm hoping I'm sorted for that amount of welding.
Thanks for the advice, lads. :)

maybe, you need to practice first :)

find the local weld shop, they'll have bits n bobs in for hopefully a decent price. should be as good as ordering online

Hobbygas are also decent

0.6mm.

I used 0.8mm on my bulkhead, you might need to do a couple passes to get good penetration
