Afternoon all

As I've mentioned previously I'm in the market for a Defender once I've put my Skoda sells and should have about £5500-6000 to play with.

While i'm waiting, can anyone recommend a trader or dealer in the midlands that won't mind me getting a test drive in one to confirm if I like them or not?

Thanks in advance
Phil

too far from me, but surely any dealer with one on the forecourt wll let you test if you seem serious about buying - just driving doesnt commit you to purchase

I've had experiences of traders telling me before "buy the car then you can drive it" plus not got the full amount till I sell the skoda at the moment

Idealy I'd like to find somewhere in the midlands as don't get much time to drive all over the country this close to Xmas sadly

Wardmans in Matlock is where my parents got theirs from. Think they were ok to deal with. Fair trek from you though.

If a car dealer won't let you test drive before buying then walk away, that has caught me out before.

Edit: or I guess you could have a drive in mine, though it isn't 100% on the road yet!

Thanks James i'll give them a look, matlock is only an hour away roughly from me so may take a butchers on their website does any one know of any traders in leicestershire?

I was gonna say wardmans too theyre preety good blokes although definately from them thar hills :D

But a main dealer should let you drive one .... but they drive nothing like whats in your budget sorry

I keep having people come up to me at petrol stations say' I've always wanted one of those' to which my standard reply is 'it's because you've never had one that you really want one':p

Ive had a few people ask me at the pumps what are they like? I always reply the same, bags of **** and then some.
The look on peoples face is brilliant:rolleyes:
Went to look at a car yesterday guy asked me what I drive, I told him he then asked what do you think of them, told him usual answer, he chuckled and said so its not just me then:D.

What?! Your meant to drive em too? I get the same question, mostly at work - same answer "drives like crap, always breaking, destroys all drive ways, cant rely on it as a daily drive, Mrs refuses to drive it" - then my smiley face comes out, defo recommend one......wouldn't have anything else now...

As for a dealer not letting you test drive - Ive never, ever had a dealer refuse me a test drive - on anything.

Out of interest what 'type' are you after 90 or 110? seats or van? 200/300 tdi?

Not 100% sure yet, I think Id struggle with a 90 pick up due to cab space ( Id need to fit exmoor style seat runners for leg room)

I do like 90's in both SW/van style but I think a van would be more useful (single/no kids/ life etc) and for general use it would be easier to throw my mountain bike in the back of a 110 without removing the wheels than a 90

With regard to engine choice I've absolutely no idea! I just don't want the N/A or earliest Turbo Diesel

Overall I'll be buying on condition over body style so even a pickup could be on the cards if its good and price is right

happend several times with me over the years some can be quite funny about you even taking a car round the block

John Craddock, Cannock,I buy most of my spares from them and have seen some cars for sale, worth giving them a ring. good luck, Den.

I should have thought you'd get yourself a decent 110 hardtop for that sort of money. Most people prefer 90s for off roading but 110s can be more practical. Still managed to get mine stuck over the back of Tamworth the other night for the best part of an hour though
