Yup , the aptly named "VAG" , VW and Audi Group , engines present in all sorts , volvos included . Then theres the Peugeot engines , the good old 2.3L D and then the XUD that seemed to find their way into a surprising variety of motors . Brakes are going to be mostly Lockheed or Girling whatever the brand they are fitted to , gearboxes ZF , alternators will be one of half a dozen makers patterns and so it goes on . When you look at vehicles manufactured by the same or linked companies then duplication is obvious .

This is a great subject and it might be the basis for a sticky thread as a database for parts so that they can be sourced from a variety of vehicles so making things easier and cheaper . For instance the D1 200 had LDV van headlights .

Now that's a cracking idea! Would be a good comparison tool to maybe keep cost down on some items. Interesting fact about the lights, as I'm after some to replace my rusty unit...

Disco rear lights were from austin maestro van no?

you have hit the nail on the head lads. I think thats a great idea! if we know that the alternator was fitted to 3 other vehicles it gives us more scope when looking around, new or from a breakers.

Looking at the shape of the van rear doors they look like they would fit the disco go someone try it

Its a Lucas A127 type on the D1 diesels , later ones in a Marelli build but same config . That alternator has been used in bloody hundreds of motors !

the good old rover V8 thats in Discos (redesigned) has been in a number of vehicles from as far back as the 60s Rover V8 engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I see it like a henry hoover: simple, been around for years, survived the test of time with a few choice improvements, if looked after then bloody reliable. Not like them bloody space aged dyson things (Disco 3s! LOL)

Right whos making the list then? so far we got:

LDV van headlights - Disco 200 headlights
Austin maestro van rear lights - Disco 1 rear lights

And my contribution: Disco 2 rear door skin - Disco 1 rear door skin!

Hey it might not be much but as Tesco say "every little helps!"

RRC is the base that D1 was built on and shares many parts .

I was joking lol the discovery was a huge risk for Ld thats why most of the 200 came from the parts bin the less development the less the risk the 300tdi had most of its own parts there is still a few though

now that would be an interesting mod... and you're right about the lights. pretty sure the door handles are off the marina as well?? and parts of the dash maybe?? seem to remember reading it somewhere but cant remember where...

also, i think, disco 1/freelander 1 have same blowers on dash, the circular ones? can anyone confirm??

The door handles started life in the Marina and were utilized in the Austin Allegro, Range Rover, Triumph TR7, and the first series of Land Rover Discovery, until 1998. They were also used by some models of the Reliant Scimitar, and by various Lotus cars, including some versions of the Lotus Esprit.
Yup im bored

Next time a snotty boy racer sneers at my disco I shall inform him that I actually share parts with lotus (well 4 parts anyway!)

yup I reckon it should become a sticky, if enough people agree surely the mods will recognise this and slap it up there.
