Hey guys. I've got a bit of a problem with my Defender. It had quite a hard day today pulling shrubs out at work. Nothing huge, just some small holly trees etc. Then it was a long run home, maybe 30 minutes at 75mph.

When I got to the lanes closer to home it started making a really nasty metallic screahing noise when under load. Mainly in second and third gear, but never before the turbo kicks in and I have to be flooring it. I guess that's just putting unwanted pressure on something and it's not happy?

I've had a read on google and the main answer seems to be prop shaft UJs? It's been giving some minor vibrations under load for a while now so is this its way of telling me it's had enough?

So, is this the most likely cause of this (really nasty sounding) noise? More importantly how long is it likely to be before it totally gives way? I could do with going back to the same job tomorrow if it will take it? Or is this its way of saying "fix me now or you're walking home"? :doh:
 
Whip your turbo pipe off the turbo ( intake side ) and look at the compressor vains for signs of touching the housing .
give it a spin with your fingers to see if it spins freely and truy pulling it in and out .
there should be a small amount side movement but none in and out .

try that first

Thanks for your advice. I'll have a look at that in the morning. Should I budget for a new one if it's got too much play or is it a bearing or other removable part?

A bit of an amateur comment I know, but the screach sounds slow. I'd expect a turbo to be quite high pitched as it spins really fast? At first I thought I had some wire or something trapped underneath and it was scraping the road but I can't see anything.
 
it might be something daft like your belts loose ? - hard to tell without actually being there and hearing it .
The reason i said it could be your turbo is that you said it only makes the noise after the turbo kicks in .
have a mooch about and see what ya find .
Twigworth breakers in Glos has a few disco 300s hidden out the back with complete engines in that you can rob bits from . i mean pay for lol

Twigworth is handy! I've got quite a few parts from them over the years, they're really helpful.

I don't think it's a belt. It could be but it doesn't sound right. As you say it's a really tough one to help with having not heard the noise! There's a bit of a grinding type noise in there which a belt wouldn't do. I'm a bit worried now you've brought up the turbo, I guess if it wasn't spinning up properly it could make that kind of noise. Oh well!

Maybe I should just go out and rag it up the road. Then I could just replace whatever falls off! :rolleyes:
 
Well if you just rag it up the road without checking first and it is your turbo touching the the compressor housing then lovely bits of alley swarf will be flying around your intake ....
then when its finnished doing that the seals might give way and your engine goes into runnaway mode if unlucky .

Try checking hoses to intercooler and turbo. If split or small hole has appeared will screech like a b~£tard when turbo spools up.
 
I took it in to the garage today. They're not main dealers but do a lot of landy work and are very reasonable. Well it's got a few issues! The near side rear wheel bearing is buggered, as is the rear CV joint. Then while we had it up on the ramps with the wheels free I asked about the backlash in the transmission. Bad move... It needs new half shafts and drive plates on the back and the outer halfshafts and drive plates on the front are pretty worn too! The wheel that had the dodgy bearing was so tired it looked like they were about to give up.

I told them to just do the lot and hit me with the damage.... Ouch! :doh:
 
You're right there, the CV joints are the ones that allow you to steer aren't they! I meant the rear UJ on the back of the rear prop shaft, sorry!

It was quite nice to watch the guy work. I know for next time that the rear half shafts are a dead simple fix that I could do myself. Not sure about the front though, too much stuff to take off and more importantly put back right!
