Hi guys
Merry Christmas

My Td5 90 has always had a metallic chatter at higher revs mainly in 3 and 4th, nothing in 5th. It's quite bad in 4th, and only occurs higher up the rev range.
I havent owned a td5 before and thought it was a characteristic.
Until today when it was starting to annoy me, and while in 4th gear with the chattering occurring, I held the gearstick back firmly into the shift gate. And the noise virtually stopped!

So any ideas what it could be?

Mechanically underneath is perfect like UJ's etc.

Have you looked at the top end, under the gearstick ?

Might have to look under the gearstick for that ,...
I'm more than happy to look under the gearstick. But I'm familiar with the mechanic side under there, and it's certainly nothing like a puma. That's all I was saying. I will double check the bias spring adjustment but 3 to 4th gate is perfect.
Anyway, thanks for your help

lt's not the alignment of the gear lever, it's removing play so the lever doesn't vibrate.

My 3/4 alignment was perfect but taking up some of the free play by adjusting both pins stopped the rattling noise.

Any ideas anyone?

yeah do you have the 2 piece gearstick n a td5 that has a rubber joint type thing half way up it? On my 1991 defender that rubber had perished causing a tinkling mechanical clinking sound that went when I had my hand on the gear stick.

I sorted it out by welding between the 2 bits to stop the slight play.

this is the bit I mean. Circled in red. I welded it in the blue area.
