my wifes Freelander td4 2005, facelift version has an annoying metalic banging noise appearsto be left rear corner. i have replaced the bump stops on diff, converted to 2wd for now, it went in for its MOT 2 days ago and passed with flying colours.
i have renewed all the rubber exhaust hangers, the garage checked all the bushes, shocks ect , all passed, nothing loose, ive even secured the dog partition, checked rear seats to make sure locating correctly, there are no scrape or marks anywhere.
the garage even checked the rear chasis bolts, all ok
even bounced on rear step, no noise, as its not all time, been on bumpy roads nothing, go on straight road it starts, just had about enough now, help anyone :)

Mine is beginning to collect an alarming number of clunks, rattles and bangs. They mainly come from the back.... no the front... no the back... well both I think. Just getting more and louder to a point where I'm going to have to stop ignoring them. It doesn't help that I've seen sink holes on the news that are smaller than the pot holes on my drive. Some of the clunks I know are just stuff moving around in the boot, and the tow bar electrics which snapped off on a rock and I've just placed on top of the tow bar mounts to the sub frame - I've used these to justify not investigating the real clunks.

So my advice is to put a couple of jacks, and maybe some other miscellaneous metal objects, in the boot and blame the clunks on them. It'll buy you 2, maybe 3, years before you have to pull your overalls on.

After you have followed GrumpyGels advice get under it and start pulling the diff about and check for cracks in the diff mounts especially the front one of the three.

replaced all three a few days ago, just before MOT, as the man said everything is solid at the rear end, and i have replaced every ball joint, suspension, disc etc at front, in fact was complemented on the work , not bad for an ex REME VM ( 25YRS AGO)

You say "converted to 2wd for now" - does this make any change? Do the bangs stop or are they still there?

Have you checked the boot space for loose objects? What about the secret hidie hole under the the floor in the boot? That tool box might be loose

Make sure you haven't driven over something and it's wrapped around a prop ...

Concerning the exhaust hangers,I have just replaced the rear exhaust O rings having last done so five and a half months ago and c.1000 miles. Is this usual?

Also the one under the engine and just behind the front wheels appear to be the same type of O ring but have a sleeve around it, as per the photo attached. Is this standard and should I use on the 2 rear ones?

Utter genious Gel. Sadly mine is going the same way now. I think I need an anvil and miniature steam hammer in my boot.

I had a damper cause an annoying rattle that I had chased for months. I bought a used one from a scrappers that fixed the problem.
Easiest way to fix it is turn the radio up and rip the knob off.
