Hi guys..hope Ya all alright! So, last night, ten o'clock, last job of a full service on my s2a Landie, went to change/drain my swivel pin oil. Opened the drain up and ... water came out! Followed by emulsified gunk!! Q1: how do I clean it before refilling, and Q2; is it an easy job to replace the seal etc... Ta in advance!
 
in reality, not much. i wouldve said just refill with EP90 and let the UJ do the rest (centrifuge it around) but if water got in, then oil will get out, probably all over your driveway in the next 2 days.

not an easy job for swivel seal replacement. which ever way you tackle it from you need to split the swivel from the axle tube. by "whatever way" i mean strip the swivel down from the hub right the way through. or unbolt the swivel from the axle tube and lift entire swivel assembly and pull entire half shaft out of the diff and axle tube.
 
It's a big job. It may not just be the seal. The chrome on the swivel ball cracks and corrodes. That could make the job expensive.

It isn't too bad to unbolt the whole assembly from the axle tube, and replace the seal on the back of the housing. Complete stripdown is a longer job, but you cna check and replace the swivel bushes if needed.

As above, sometimes the ball will need replacing as well.

Whatever you do, they are likely to fill up again if you drive through deep water.
 
Guys...!! Thank you! I kinda had the feeling of what youd all say, but i needed to be sure! Also, my balls are a bit rough, so im off to the doctor i guess. Ahem, sorry, garage!!!! For now its a top up and a wait to see if the missus kills me for (more) oil on the drive.
 
I know someone who fitted Disco swivel balls to his series though - I know that the joint used UJ's on the series. I suspect that he did a bit more than just swap the swivel balls then from the sounds of it - I wonder if he just swapped the entire axle or summat.

Reason he did it of course was pitted swivels.

I do pity a friend of mine who used to lord his Landcruiser of mine until he found hed got pitted swivels - which are welded onto the axle tube! Never let him forget that I have swappable balls (ooer!) :)
 
Yeah it sounds like he fitted Def / Disco axles but he would have needed to either mod the chassis to fit coil springs or mod the axles to fit leaf springs either way its a big job and tend to look daft on a series really as the axles are wider but if fitted with Def wing arches they look alright but you are then making it look like a pretender then :)
