oh wow must have been a real shock and so pleased ur ok buddy and as the others said the hippo can be replaced

may i ask what happended to the other driver, has he admitted liabilty ,

just dont need all the nightmare of the i surance company now going to i expect battle it out and insult you with an offer of replacing ur freelander

fingers crossed it will all be sorted out quickly and painlessly ,

Ive seen quite a few hippos on there roofs etc on various forums websites, main stream media outlets.......and all have lived to tell the tail :)

As for other models...... a disco ended up on its roof not so long ago and, sadly ended in a fatality.........

Hippos must be made with nine lives...:)
 
The difference is the hippo is a monocoque the disco is a. Light body on a stiff chassis. All traditional 4x4s crumple badly when you hit the body and not the chassis.

As said, the strength is in the monocoque construction...glad you walked away, in a smaller car could've been very different!

A vehicle with a separate chassis is much worse in an impact. Often the chassis deflects the hitting object into the softer non structural body work.
A monocoque is designed to absorb impacts. Even the roof of the Freelander is much more sturdy than that of a Disco or Defender.

Euro NCAP ratings are a guide, that's all. The Freelander was a 3 iirc. As far as I know the tests between vehicle types alters which makes direct comparison difficult. What would happen if a 5☆ super mini were to hit a 5☆ large 4X4?
A few years ago, my wife hit our 50th edition into a 2ft high loose lay wall. The Freelander demolished the wall, making its own ramp before driving 20 feet with 2 wheels on the wall, then came off the other end.
The Freelander body was completely undamaged. There was extensive damage to the suspension components, but those were simple bolt on parts.
The Freelander is stronger than the NCAP ratings imply.

The Euro NCAP results I looked up. It is the head on collisions that it doesn't seem to fair well on.

None of what has been described in above posts have been head on collisions.
 
Glad you're OK. Obviously Freelanders protect people better than dummies! I seem to remember a writeup from an Aussie journo who had a 'major event' in his Freelander and it protected him very well. He was raving over the car.
 
Thanks for all the kind words I know its only metal but it was my metal. just waiting for insurance to sort it all out and then start looking
 
So are all discos of the non monocock type..? I was considering buying one a 3 or 4 series......

As above I'd be buying the same car again. I protected you once from what looks a nasty accident. Wouldn't wish it to happen to you a second time but if it did, you know you're safe in a Freelander.
