Hi,

Does anyone know the safe payload for a Freelander 1 TD4? I'm confused with all the data I've looked up. I want to transport a load of 2x2 paving slabs and wondering how many I can take at a time safely

I bought 25 slabs back in October and had to make 2 journeys.

Those things are bloody heavy!

Max load according to LandRover is 440 Kg

what about trailer weight?

i took nearly a tone be4 in the back of my van freebie i only did it cause it was just literally 1 min down the road and was to lazy to make 2 trips! the front end was wheelying down the road! never again!!!!!!

Max trailer weight is 2 tonne - max trailer nose-weight is 75kg.

LandRover say 140kg - the swan-neck towbar I have has '75kg max' stamped on the little plate rivetted on it.

So I expect it depends on the tow hitch rather than the chassis then.

Anyone got a towbar with a plate saying 140kg?

I agree - I found that out just by loading it and looking at how far down it sank. LOL

Have done the dozen 2x2 flag run myself,

When the wheel arch is about to touch the tyre.....it's time to stop loading.

personal best is 600kg payload and 275kg roof rack (custom made rack) but not at the same time?!

Like all loads, you need to make sure they are secure and not going to pummel the driver on steep downhills, commercial FL1 have secure mesh bulkheads.
 
interestingly more caution needed with the commercial. As a commercial, it has a plated weight, which if you exceed, can render you liable to prosecution.

However, normal car version does not have a plated weight, and therefore you cannot be prosecuted for overloading directly, only an indirect offence.

A while back, on police stop bastard or some other program, the guy had a rover 214, as it turns out, with over a ton of slates in the boot/back seats. There wasn't a lot they could do about overloading, because no-one could say how overloaded it was without a plated weight. However, the ones who were driving vans or pickups were bang to rights.

They ended up suggesting he removed some at the weighbridge, which he did, everyone was happy.

My alko is also 75kg, not that I stick that much in anyway, I don't see the point in loading the nose that heavy. About 30-40kg is enough for me.

just checked mine and it has 140kg stamped on it for the max :eek:

Looks like it does depend on the tow-hitch then.

140Kg being the max.

75kg trailer nose-weight seems to be the most common on a couple of caravan web-sites it had a quick look at.

To quote from a caravanning guide "Experience has shown that a noseweight in the region of 5% to 7%of the actual laden weight of the caravan is safest. However, the maximum noseweight will always be limited by the lowest of the car, towbar or caravan coupling vertical loadlimit"
