Hi Guys...anyone any real world experience of fitting either:
245/75/R16 or
235/85/R16
to a stock disco 2 on coils. I've read some conflicting posts recently...some saying modification is required, others saying no.

I'm changing down from R18's in the hope to improve the harsh ride quality and assuming that the larger sidewall of either of these 2 sizes will give me the ride quality improvement I'm looking for. The 235's have the larger sidewall of the 2 sizes.

So anyone fitted these and will they fit on a stock disco 2 with coils?

I use 235/85s for offroading. They need a min 1.5 inch lift to minmise rubbing in the front arches. You'll also need to cut back the lower rear edges of the standard front bumper if still fitted & modify the front of the plastic wheel arch liners.
Because they're ~ 1.5 inches larger in dia. they'll foul on the radius arms much sooner, significantly reducing steering lock unless you add at least 30mm spacers or use increased offset wheels - which then might foul on rear arches. With the increased offset, the front s will then rub on the wheel arch edges a bit at full articulation / lock - dependant on how firm your springs are.
Using the standardise 16 in tyres will improve ride a lot without any mods reqd.

I've tried many kind of tires on mine, 16" all, 245/70/16 was the biggest for me, no probs with it... but the best ride by far is with the stock 265/55/16... it makes a big difference believe me... the quality of ride is improved with 16" against 18" not due to the sidewall but cos it's more air in them.... and use the recommended pressures too (attached)

245/75/16 will fit no problems. 265/70/16 will just about fit as long as they're not spaced out at all. You might need to trim the front mud flaps slightly.

The 255 sizes mentioned are a nice fit also.

Right Guys....excellent feedback....a couple if questions:

Pawl...ok so I'll rule out 235/85's based on your feedback

Sierra...really interested in your feedback as commonly held belief is its all about sidewall. I don't see 265's in your chart?

Orch...when you say 265/70/16 will just about fit as long as they're not spaced out at all...what do you mean by "spaced out"?

Finally guys...does the actual choice of tyre matter in any of this or is it just the size as discussed. I'll be sticking to either a General Grabber AT or maybe just a standard road tyre.

I run 255/70/16 BFG AT,s on my standard suspension D2 with zero issues.
245/70/16 will be almost igentical in size.

that list is from the Land Rover D2 workshop manual...those are the standard officially accepted sizes... here the standard size is written in the car's identification document and if the tire is different it fails MOT:mad: ... but after i put those standard 255/65/16 Dunlop Grandtrek AT3's the ride and steering is so smooth that i'm not even thinking to go for other size whatsoever

I mean as long you haven't fitted 30mm spacers behind the wheels to push them outwards, or you're using them in wheels with additional offset that has the same effect.
