Hi Folks

My 4.6V8 P38 has just swallowed its 2nd Mass air meter in 6 months. 1st one went when I first got vehicle and supplying dealer fixed it, (maybe? - symptom was no power when under load but disconnect mass air meter - and all well). Anyway mass air meter replaced and no further issues until 2 weeks ago when car would fire up and immediately shut down again. Eventually got it to start - no further issues until yesterday when she just cut out on me coming down a hill on my shoot, then same problem ie would start and immediately shut off. Left vehicle for an hour and managed to start it - very sick at first then OK. Managed to drive it off the shoot and it died on me again on the main road. Had to call AA who tried all the obvious stuff. We then disconnected mass air meter and hey presto - car starts and runs - for about 4 miles! then dies with same problem even with mass air meter disconnected. Towed to local garage where next morning car starts fine . Same local garage (Land Rover specialist) confirms mass air meter problem later that day (today).

Anyone else seeing this on petrol P38's? I have heard that Audi mass air meters are notoriously crap too....

Any help appreciated - Thanks.

Which engine have you got? GEMS or THOR?

The GEMS engines are notoriously fussy with the airflow meters and aftermarket meters apparently usually cause trouble. Unfortunately replacement OEM ones can be VERY expensive.

Was it a cheap replacement or proper OEM ? Please dont tell me you bought an eBay chinese one ?

GEMS had a square Plenum Chamber otop of the engine whilst THOR had a...er...how to descibe it??....a err....for the want of a better term...'Ribbed' plenum chamber....

Will try to find pictures....

As for your problem....check for leaks in the induction pipework....My previous 3.9 would have trouble starting and running and it was caused by a split in one of the intake pipes...

Thanks for the info guys. As for was the air meter an OEM part or a cheap eBay chinese one - not sure. It was replaced "under warranty" as it were, when I first got the car...

... That'll be the Chinese one then!!??
