Just had a work mate complain after fitting an EGR blanking plate to his 2003 TD5. At 70 mph he put his foot down on the motorway and the engine cut out, garage informs him of a fault on the ECM (mass air flow).

Has anyone had this problem before or know why this has happened ?

Dont know much about TD5's but has he disconnected all the wiring and hoses from the EGR valve? Has he taken the whole EGR gubbins off, or just put the blanking plate on and replaced the EGR?

Afaik if its blocked off its important to disconnect the leads/hoses id have thought more so on a TD5 which has EDC, if the maf sensor is looking for values from the EGR circuit, its gonna get some pretty weird ones if the EGR is still attached electrically after its been blanked.

I went the whole hog on my 300 and binned everything to do with the EGR and replaced the inlet pipe with one that doesnt have the branch-off for the EGR nastyness :)

Im sure someone with TD5 knowledge will elaborate/suggest other possible causes fixes :)

Hi

"Mass Air Flow" is prone on all modern vehicles to getting covered in crap and giving false or no readings to the ECU.Try cleaning it first with cotton buds, pipe cleaners & petrol,if there is no change get a new one.

I fitted the EGR blank to my TD5 and didnt need to go anywhere near the MAF or it's electrics.
The ECU should have a default program which allows the engine to run without a reading from the MAF. the test of this would be to disconnect the wiring clip and drive it over 70mph.
that said, i recently took my TD5 for a tune and the MAF was reading about 36 on the computer, the guy said it
should read about 54. we changed it for a new one and now it goes like stink, it took 3 seconds off the 0-60 time! However with a MAF giving a low reading, it still went over 70mph without cutting out!
A new MAF is about £70

My TD5 Disco 2 at 35k miles has the EGR plated at the manifold end. Nothing else was touched (yet), no wires off or anything.

made an INSTANT improvement in everything.

Two weeks ago did 962 mile round trip to Surrey (England) and back on under 27 gallons of diesel which is 36 miles per gallon. That's not bad for a 2-tonner with the ballistics of a brick.

England is a quaint tourist resort on the south coast of Scotland.
