Had somebody run into the back of my car whilst towing them on my straight bar (turning a corner at the time we were) put a bit of a crack in rear light lens but she did show some rather nice legs when she got out to say sorry so I forgave her !

Very difficult to turn without power steering. Had this when the surpentine belt broke. Would advise putting on the back of a tow truck. Try the spare key first.

Agreed. Lost braking and power steering on one of my many adventures, not a happy space.
Before anyone says 'we managed before power steering' , unlike the cars we drove in 80s, and before these vehicles are not made to be without pas.

I would have forgiven her if the crack was attached to nice legs.:D

Other than a place in Calafornia I don’t know what monterey is?
I managed with a Case JX90, towed with a friend driving my RR, no engine power steering or brake booster 4ft wheels on front

Will check but 99% sure it’s ok
Hi Ruby Range,
I trust you got your car back home safely but wanted to pick up on everyone's comment about battery condition. My last RR had exactly the same "Brake Lights ON" issue and it was due to low battery volts. Unfortunately for me the cause was a slow drain to earth at the engine earth strap, so every time I recharged it the same happened 24 hours later. My solution was clean up the strap and fitted a new Stop/Start battery as the old one was all but fried by endless charging. Some of the guys & gals here may disagree with my battery choice but it was suggested to me by RR specialist as they always fit them and I didn't have another issue or low voltage problem thereafter. Make sure you get the alternator checked for charge rate too. Good luck.
Tricky.

I'd be interested to know how a dirty engine earth strap can cause battery drain.

Sounds odd but the only thinking at the time was that it prevented the car from shutting down properly when switched off. The reality was that the problem was solved. Tricky.
P.S. Off to walk the dog now so catch you all later.

If the connections were corroded, then quite likely the alternator was not charging the battery fully.

Hi again,
That makes more sense thinking about it. I was just so relieved the brake lights were off and the car started every time I turned the key. It's great to have all the luxury and toys but I just wish Land Rover had built in a more robust system of either maintaining battery condition or at least having Volts and Amps displayed on screen for those of us who would pay attention to them. I have thought to install the gauges myself but keep putting other things higher up the "to do" list. Arguably, without a good battery the whole car's dead anyway so should be my next job. Anyone else done this before? Cheers.
Tricky.

Power steering don’t make much difference when you are moving
Try saying that when you are in one of these beasts, in outside lane of motorway, with no braking, no pas, engine cut out and trying to get on to hard shoulder, under the momentum from when engine was running. I can assure you it makes a MASSIVE difference.

Power steering makes a difference when going very slowly like reverse parking, you shouldn’t need it on motorway.
Yep and people 'shouldn't' be horrible, it 'shouldn't' rain on a sunny day when you don't have a jacket, the last parking space 'shouldn't' be taken by someone else 10 seconds before you get there. Also one shouldn't say "Power steering don’t make much difference when you are moving", then when pointed out yes it does, change it to "you shouldn’t need it on motorway.",, despite the real world example of it having been needed, when on the motorway. And so on. Oh and I 'shouldn't' start a sentence with a conjunction, but I just did. :p

I haven’t changed my mind. I find driving an actual tractor that weighs far more than any Range Rover and has wheels nearly as tall as Henry will steer without a running engine at 15/20mph. Motorway is much faster

That's your experience. Mine was an L322 that had just lost all power, which means no pas, was difficult to steer , despite doing 70mph a few seconds before. Anyone who says a vehicle which is designed to have pas, is not harder to steer without pas, is making it up.

Addit: Trying to take a pas vehicle, around roundabouts or sharp corners without the pas, is also no fun
