ok so i checked the pipes going to the lift pump and the pipe from the filter was in the top and the pipe going from the tank on the bottom pipe. i swapped them over then undid the bleed screw and pumped until the air stopped and fuel pis**d out. does this sound right?? won't know until tomorrow as battery is on charge

Sounds like it's suckling fuel not air. So that's good. Did you check the stop solenoid connection?

Did you see the two pics I posted? Look at injectors follow fuel line from the injectors to the fuel injection pump. On the top of the injection pump there is a round lump with a spade or some kind of crimp or wire on it. That's the stop solenoid cuts off fuel when no leccy. If you have a standard fit air cleaner it will be almost under that towards the wing. It's pretty low down
 
Plus defenders are as simple as get :p why lots of not mechanics buy them as projects cos they're big simple (ish) mechano :D

It's also great to know if you have a problem you can share it and fix it!

whilst the pipes were out of the tank, I turned the engine a couple of times to fit the lift pump; is it possible that there is a bucket of air in the system? When I first tried to jump start it (the battery was flat), it did start up. it was lumpy and spluttery but it ran. for a minute or so. since then it just caught and splutters, you can hear its trying to start, it just doesn't get there.

There probably was a bucket of air in the system considering you had the tank out and pipes would probably have let fuel run back out the pipes.

Did you bleed the whole system before you tried to start it the first time?
 
He is up and running now .
May have helped him getting the pipework the right way around as well.
