Brother has a huge inverter in his Disco twin batterys and we run an angle grinder off it occasionally works quite well always boiling kettles of water when camping no probs
 
I got a small single socket 230V inverter from Maplins for about £18. I hard wired it to my battery and only ever used it whilst the engine was running. It provided ample power for my girlfriends hair drier, numerous phone chargers and a security lamp whilst camping. I had it running maybe half an hour a time and it never over-heated or cut out on me once. I ran it once without the engine running and it started blipping before automatically cutting out after about 40 seconds. It wouldn't let my battery get low enough not to crank the engine. Ofcourse, I did have an old N/A under the bonnet at the time and the battery didn't have enough juice left to fire the bugger up.

Twin batteries will give you twice as long obviously or twice the wattage for the same amount of time. But the cost of a decent split charge system and invertor. just can't be justified. generator is cheaper and more verstatile
 
He got it from a trade shop for under 100 notes tis I think 3000W but would need to check it takes up the whole of the disco passenger cubby box and has 2x serious battery cables per terminal. well handy tho when wer'e out and about and need the grinder
 
never bothered with a split charge system. Never flattened the battery always have the engine running when using ittbh. In any case tis a 200 tdi worse case is a nicad pack on the starter solonoid and push it and it will start!
 
I have 240v hook up when at a camp site that lets you plug in. Then the on board charger tops up the aux battery (And the other half's electric blanket when the weather cools down LOL) .
Most of everything else is 12v or Gas

Get a gas cartridge cooker and a kettle, works for me :)
 
Maplins sell small invertors that are great for running laptops, shavers fone charger etc. but I wouldn't bother going for a full split charge system until ya ready to fit ya winch.

Just had a look on ebay and there are loads of power invertors on there; from 80w all the way up to 2000w. If I'd be looking at basic lighting etc., I guess around 400/500w should be more than sufficient; these are going for around £30-£40.
My only worry still though would be running the battery flat:confused:

Will get a army trangia stove to use for the cooking or might even get one of them army petrol cookers.

Once I have a bit more money spare I'll invest in a split charge system.

Say if I'd want to power a small portable telly; what would I need and how long would it last?
You wouldn't want to run your engine whilst watching telly:confused:
 
Cheeers Pos you have answered my dilmma, Maplins it is then.

Here you go: 300W DC 12V to AC 230V Power Invertor with USB Charging Socket : InCar Power Invertors : Maplin I paid a little less for a very similar item that didn't have a USB charging port around two years ago. they always seem to have offers on in store so you might get one a little cheaper. It came with crocodile leads so that you could just clip it onto your battery as well as some spade type leads so that it could be wired in as more of a permanent fixture. I simply routed the wires through the seat box and brought them up behind the passenger seat where I then mounted the inverter to the rear bulkhead. You'll get away with running it for very short times (1-2 minutes at most) if you have a good battery, but I'd suggest you always have the engine running just in case you flatten it - you have been warned!

Oh, and you could use your inverter to keep a 12V jump start pack charged up so that if you do flatten your battery, at least you've got something to get it running with. I always keep mine on charge (via the inverter) when I'm camping. That said, you might be able to get a jump start kit with a standard cigarette lighter charging lead - mine hasn't.
