Hi, been away for a while got problems with 2002 freelander 1 td4 fuel consumption has dropped through the floor, checked Maf sensor change that, new Bosch injectors, engine smokey, smells of unburnt diesel from a exhaust and on acceleration it's intermittent power and it seems not have as much poke as it use too. Any ideas?

Map sensor clogged up with carbon. Inlet manifold full of carbon. Boost hoses split.
Rail sensor harness damaged or corroded.
Injectors aren't normally replaced until all other possibilities are ruled out.

Thanks Nodge68 some where to start

Hi. Nodge68 Thanks for your advice on the post I last put on the forum, turned out to be both a new MAF sensor and MAP Sensor straight out of the box, both knackerd. I replaced with Pierburg now pulling like a train.
Next job low pressure fuel pump and cab heater motor replacement.
thanks again

Can a Pierburg MAF be fitted without a Ronbox?
My TD4 has had a remap but still running the OEM MAF which I'm about to replace, if I can fit a Pierburg MAF then I'll deffo go down that route.

no .. on it's own , without the compensating ron-box, it's too weak.
.............................................................................
i did try it once . vehicle wouldn't go over 50mph .. or so ..
[ i.e. fergot to switch the ron-box maf switch to 'on' ]

If it was remapped, then it would have made sense to map out the MAF requirements, as it's only there to mitigate black smoke production.

I will be getting my own mapped soon is this something he should just do or is it something I should ask for ?

You'll probably have to ask for it. I'm assuming the EGR functionality has remained in the MAP, as that's the only reason the MAF is there.

Isn't it there to pass MOTs - even if its not actually working.
The EGR is there to reduce nitrogen dioxide emissions. However it's not tested as part of the MOT, as it's only active under certain running conditions.
For the MOT, it's just a visual check on EGR equipment, to make sure it's still there. If it's mapped out of the ECM, then there's no way an MOT tester could tell.

That's what I mean.

So they are not doing their job? Surely at some point someone will call it out and a dictate will go out to testing stations to do it properly.
Clearly not, but then cars with illegal headlamp bulbs also pass the MOT, and that's much more dangerous to other road users.
My MOT garage is particularly strict compared to others around failing the wife's VW Eos on the headlamp height adjustment not working quite right (it was missing the middle position), but things do slip through the test occasionally.
