Happy new year everyone :)
My Disco 2 has had a couple of instances over the Xmas period where when trying to overtake at high speed\revs we have encountered occasional juddering\lack of power from the engine. This is not regular or fequent.
This also does not happen at normal (cruising) or low revs and I think that it's time to fit a new MAF. A new air filter was fitted last summer and although looking a bit grotty I don't think it is that but this will be replaced at the same time.
I've sourced a new Siemens one (direct replacement) from Euro Car Parts for just under £100 and with an additional 5% off due to a new years promotion it came in at a very reasonable £87.
Now, issues about genuine vs aftermarket aside what I'm curious about is what should be the time period between these being swapped out, if there is a recommended one.
When I brought the car it had a 'full LR service history' which I'm rapidly beginning to think is just lip-service to what servicing tasks should be done at long yearly intervals as so far I've had to swap out the rear air suspension bags (never done in 13 years) and the air compressor filter. I suspect that the MAF is the orginal fitted article as well i.e. 13 years old.
At what stage have you swapped yours out at?
 
It had a MAJOR service last year (drop and change everything) when I forst brought it.
But I suspect that 13 years on a single MAF sensor hasn't left it in the best of conditions. Other digging around on the net leaves me to belive that it's at least 5 years past it's useful date (the Disco has done 127k now).
 
Ah, that. No all is fine there. The previous owner had the loom and seal sorted out before I got it. Still fine today.
 
Well, I haven't paid for it yet (it's on reserve at Euro Car parts and they were shut yesterday when their website said they'd be open), so the plan today is to buy a new air filter as even though the current one is not even 10 months old it's looking quite grotty.
I've got a nice run into Cumbria today to see if that sorts it out.
If not I'll have to find someone with a Nanocom.
MAF Sensors are a bit of a strnage beast to get an opinion on. Some forums go ape about recommned they are swapped out after x years due to natural wear on them some are having big debates about aftermarket vs genuine replacements, but no one actually has a discussion about wether they should be swapped out as a time worn part.

Why suspect the MAF? Sounds more like turbo boost modulator valve shenanigans (for example). I'd get the codes checked before chucking £££ around

The MAF can wear out sooner or later depending on more factors so there's no pattern for that, it depends on the air filter quality, driving style, average ambient temperature, amount of crankcase gasses....and so on, as long as the live readings are around 55 at idle and 600 or above at full throttle it's good and no need to change it... period
 
Thanks for the advice so far everyone. I fitted a Bosch filter yesterday replacing the no-name filter the so-called Land Rover specialists put in last year which helped considerably.
However, there is still a bit of lag at high revs (but much less than before).
I'll get it in a small place I know with diagnostics as soon as I can.
 
This issue sounds typical of a sticky turbo wastegate. 5 mins to check and free up. Id be doing that before spending any cash. Do a search and youl find it.

Wow, thanks. Just looked that up and the reported symptoms and it seems to be the culprit.
Had a look under the bonnet and the gate is pretty solid (actually, very solid - won't move even with pliers) so have just been out to get a large tin of WD40 and will tackle it in the morning.
I'll let you all know how I get on :)

Well, that fixed it. The wastegate was jammed solid and it took quite a bit of freeing off. Still needs a bit more movement and WD40 to keep it totally free, but a quick blast down the A59 showed all was on the mend.
It also allowed me to discover where the mystery of the vanishing coolent should be blamed as the top of the top-hose bleed screw simply fell off when I touched it! A new metal one is now on order and I can run around with the bottom part of the screw still in place for a few days more.
Thanks for the help everyone, saved me a hundred pounds and opened my eyes to a new thing that needs checking periodically :)
