Ohh? So the 100" defenders need SVA? Right, well, that changes it a fair bit then. So its not possible to get a LWB discovery without alot of paperwork? (Excluding the ambulance)

First few pages say its for vehicles less than ten years old, and is for light goods vehicles, which mine will be neither of? So dont I need IVA?

Okay, before I take the deep dive into the IVA documents, because Ive got a rough idea of what it says (having started to read it a while ago) but Ive not pulled apart a defender or discovery, so I dont know exactly where the bodymounts are, or if they are the same? Or is it like trying to stick lego to k-nex?
Im allowed to move the body mount on the body, but not the chassis, correct? So if the body mounts are in the same place (or near enough) then its not a problem

Yes, SVA as we knew it has gone, it is now IVA
see here
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/iva-application-form-for-passenger-cars-iva-1c
have a good read of it as as soon as you start to modify a vehicle it becomes extremely important.
Basically you cannot alter a chassis or a monocoque body without needing to pass IVA.
Passing IVA deffo is not impossible, kit car builders all do it, unless they build on an existing chassis.

thanks. Been a few years since Iv put 1 through any vosa tests.

I have explained all this before on this post.

As we all have been telling you:
  • read the documentation fully and NOT with hope in your heart, be realistic, the inspectors do not miss a trick. and if you try it on you'll only put their backs up.
  • if what you are doing WILL pass IVA , factor in the cost and annoyance of having to pass it, then go for it.
  • Go and actually measure up and find out where the feckin body mounts on both are.
  • Take your time, get it right first time, otherwise you'll get heartache and give up.
  • If you think it'll take a period of time, double that, then double it again, unless you have nothing else to do in your life and you mum still does your washing and cooks your meals :D:D:D

If you were building a kit car every feckin thing would count; angles and positions of mirrors, noise level from the exhaust, weights at axles, heights of upper seat belt mounts, protrusions ALL over the car, inside and out, manufacture and positioning of the fuel tank, etc, etc, et bloody caetera. As you are basing your vehicle broadly on an existing vehicle a lot of what you are doing should comply already.

Okay thanks all, Ill re-read the whole thread, since its been a while. Thanks all for the responses. If I can, Im trying to avoid the IVA, due to all the costs and time and so on. The ambulance isnt entirely off the cards yet, as it looks like a very good place to start (LWB chassis, discovery body, already compliant etc)
If I do have to IVA something, Im not too concerned, since all the little annoyances are already done, all the seatbelt mounts and mirrors and lights and so on, although if I do have to go the IVA route, I think the cheapest, easiest way to do it is to extend the chassis, either by adding new metal or by using another rear half chassis

Are we now singing from the same hymn sheet now?
I think the ambulance idea is the best.
If I had nothing better to do I'd go for one of those, the problem will be finding one, and finding one in decent condition.

Well they only made 15 of them and only 1 is for sale, so I do need to sell mine quite sharpish if Im to buy the ambulance.
Quick question, bobtails, they dont need IVA approval do they? And that involves moving the body mounts (all be it outside the wheelbase)
Also, body lifts - Im guessing now, but this is where metal is added as a.spacer between the chassis and the body? These dont need IVA either do they?

Erm, everything? I live in a rural place, so Im happy to commute in a big old bus, take it greenlaning, maybe one day do a really big overlanding trip in it? Who knows, the whole point is to learn and build something special, and to use it to do cool land rover things in it

I would not be chopping up a motor like this.

Why not? Its cheap-ish, certainly cheaper than a defender, maybe marginally more expensive that 2 bucket-y discos, but certainly cheaper than getting anything IVA-worthy and then going through the whole process

Buy a 130 defender and just have a truck cab.make a flat bed for the rear.

why would you chop a rare motor up? You could make it into a good camper. You could still use this as a daily drive etc

Well I certainly cant afford a defender 130, so thats off the list.
This disco, its not high enough to stand up in, its roughly 1.6m. Now, the other big issue with it is, if you take that disco, with a lift and some big tyres, now the height really starts to be of concern, with low bridges, hight restricted car parks, drive thru, garages, shipping containers etc. Its still in the "thinking about" stage. The roof is fiberglass so its probably very easy to make another roof, if I wanted a pop-top type of thing
