just returned from a 400 mile round trip this weekend and for the first time in my life i decided to work out the mpg as there is always someone on here asking " what mpg should i expect from a ........". well on a mainly motorway route( A55,M56,M6,A14,A605) at an average of 70/75 mph. i have returned 28.5 mpg. this is in a 1991 200tdi discovery.just thought i would share this with you all and see what you all think, high or low ;)

Very similar to mine. I would like to know how I can make it a little better with driving style though. I am sure you could get just over 30 MPG out of it.

Birmingham to Bristol and return pulling single axle 1300kg caravan . 200tdi returned 29.1 ( stayed at 50-60mph)
regards Harddrive

i get anything between 25 and 30 mpg, (depending on driving style/roads), so your figures seem just about identical.
i cant seem to get above 30 mpg though.

I could weep ...if I can squeeze 14.4 it's a good day and that's on 98, try and run her on the cheap stuff (91) and it goes down to about 12.5

I have a Disco2 TD5 from new, now done 84k miles, average mpg (when I bother to check) is 30.3. That covers some towing, some in-town commuting, but loads of miles on the A9 here in Scotland (60-75mph cruising)...

I did a sponsored pub crawl/bike ride last summer and got six miles to a gallon before I fell off.

My old 200tdi disco averaged 34mpg when we went on hols to Annecy a couple of years ago keeping to about 70mph on the motorways over there.

had a '93 RR classic 200tdi - used to return 34.6mpg, long commutes on relatively straight A & B roads
Current td5 110 returned 27.3mpg on the last tank, running average around 25 including towing.

It was a nice vehicle but I preferred the look of a defender, 12 seats is a bonus with having young kids their mates etc etc. So I sold it and changed for my 110 when I moved job & house.

Now I drive a company car for most journeys and use the 110 for fun - only did just over 3k miles last year

im lucky now. only 1 girl left at home and shes at uni. not here very often.

she just visits us and leaves some dirty clothes to wash!
bet i do more miles in the focus tdi taxi-ing her about than i do for meself?
glad it does 60 mpg!

60mpg  - I chose a Golf plus tdi and get 48mpg - s'pose that as I don't pick up the repair/running costs [other than fuel] may have a bearing on my mechanical sympathy and right foot, 400 plus mile return journeys don't add to my sense of leisure either especially when returning in time to take kids to cubs etc:D

aye. i drive pretty gently these days. done all my racing about like a lunatic by now. used to race minis and escorts etc too. so got all that out of my sytem. cant be bothered chasing knobheads from the traffic lights anymore!

Totally agree, watching some chav in lowered nova revving away at the lights then wheel spinning off......maybe one day they'll see the light and buy a landy?
Getting around 29 - 30mph from my 300tdi:)
