Hi
Asked question a while ago about my 2.0XEdi. The problem is that the revs go up and down when the engine is idleing. Someone suggested "the hammer mod". However i don't know what that is. Could it be the injector pump is the fault. Any help would be appreciated.

could be an injector issue, try putting some injector cleaner in with the diesel first.
could be a timing issue, when were the belts last changed?

Hi Howardo

Sorry to take so long to reply been very busy. The air cleaner was renewed about 2 months ago.I will try the injector cleaner. However the problem has changed a bit. The engine starts fine, but when idleing the revs go up and down on it's own. A continous BRROOM,BRROOM,BRROOM. The engine also does not like to rev above 3000rpm. I am a complete novice with diesels and therefore am a bit thick about them. Someone suggested it may be the injector pump, and someone mentioned "the hammer mod" straight over my head i'm afraid. Any help, suggestions, or ideas greatly appreciatedl

My mate had this before turned out to be a perished hand prime bulb letting air into the system and the EGR valve needed a clean.
Has the engine just started doing this or has it been occuring for a while?
Check these bits out, get some millers injector cleaner in it and give it a good 'Italian tune up' (good all gears thrash!):D

Hi
Thanks where will i find the two items hand prime bulb and the EGR so i can check them.
Complete novice on diesels and freelanders. Engine has been doing it for a while. Wil;l also try injector cleaner.

Dave, did you ever get this problem sorted? I've got exactly the same symptoms with my Xdi...:(

Cheers,
Martin

Hi Martin
No it still does the same thing. Like someone is constantly blipping the throttle on tickover. Have been told the "hammer mod" would help, but can't find out exactly what it is. Any other suggestions greatly welcomed.

Hi
Still trying to sort out this engine problem. I am now told the engine is "Hunting" if that helps find the solution. Someone has suggested it could be the injector pump, is this possible. I have been offered a rover diesel car would the injector pump from this fit. Also the turbo does not seem to be cutting in. Any help would be appreciated. I have checked for leaks on systems and air, oil and fuel filters have all been changed. Air con is not switched on and there are not fuel leaks. HELP PLEASE???????

Check all the wiring to the injection pump, stop solenoid and no 1 injector. Move/ bend the wiring when the engine is running to see if it makes a difference to the idle. It's fairly common on L series for broken/shorting wires to give this kind of symptom.
