Edit again - Thread back to life and pictures etc starting to be done properly from page 2.

Pictures full size as the thread goes on, page 1 is a right mess sorry

EDIT: Due to photobucket no longer hosting all of my photo's went down. I am slowly working through adding the images through IMGUR however they wont be in the same order etc etc.. Highly annoying!

So I posted up in the introduce myself section with pictures of the underside, not revealing the truck itself as I hadn't yet picked it up and I had questions. Now the time has come! Truck is located in Bristol and over the last few days I've given and received the mandatory thumbs up from other owners, maybe 5-6 of you so make yourselves known!

She's called Lulu at present, purely because that's what the sticker says on the side! Debating if this stays so hopefully I can edit the title later on if it doesn't.

This is my first Defender, in fact my first 4x4 and I needed to scratch that itch. This one has 'special vehicles' in the engine bay plate and badge on the side, any idea's on this as google wasn't very helpful.

Here she is 'as purchased' minus cleaning wheels/tyres and giving it a quick spray underneath in the Sainsbury's jet wash.

The day I went to view - BMW currently not sold so that's tying up funds for the truck some what. Had that since Jan 16 and loved every minute of it to be honest. (Had many a car as I'm sure you all have)

Welcome to the looooooony zone !:) one of the FIRST things to do is fit a TRACKER so you don't wake up & find it NOT were you parked it !!:eek::eek::eek::(:(

First thing is have one of you lovely members tell me what colour it is as the local paint shop doesnt have a code to match and plate in bay is blank. There is a secret code to get into the truck which consists of crossing certain fingers and swearing at it in an organised yet firm manner with the exact words or she wont unlock. That combination of course i will keep a secret.

Nice pics, wish most who ask tech questions posted as good pics as that. :)

No idea about the paint, but I would be looking at a few other issues first if that was mine.

Quite a bit of surface rust on chassis and axles, bulkhead looks to be about to let go with corrosion. Rear trail arm bush is brinky, and looks like you have some oil leaks. There is a patch welded on the rear chassis leg, doesnt look a great job to me.

Nothing terminal, but it would be worth trying to get on top of it before it gets worse.

Ahh indeed sorry if i made it sound like i was just going to paint the truck and leave it! I have more pics to post. Reason for wanting the paint colour is so i habe some ready mixed on the shelf for when the spanners come out. For example if im going to underseal the chassis afrer wire brush i'll give the underbody a quick blast over or if i remove any hinges they can have a touch up. Just good to have it on hand really.

Can you elaborate more to the newbie about the bulkhead as any welding issues i'll want sorted sooner rather than later. Maybe the oldskool pointy arrow on my pic would be super helpful to me.

I'll be wirebrushing down chassis as best i can and any attention will be sorted as i sweep through and collect parts. Rear shock bush i can see daylight so i guess that needs attention. Has m.o.t with no advisories at present however.

On the oil leak front your one ahead of me, i have more pics to come and i've already got a few things on order but the mechanical list feels like a long one at this point in time

Replying on my phone so no extra pics etc till this evening at best.

Thanks for your replies and your keen eyes its much appreciated.

Mark.

That sounds good. Use a wire brush in a drill or small grinder, one of the coarse knotted brushes is ideal. And I would not use underseal, it traps the dirt and moisture underneath, and makes the rust worse. I use rust resist primer, followed by black enamel, but one of the outside chassis wax compounds is ok too.
Waxoyl, Dinitrol, Bildt Hamber, according to your preference.

Damnit! I've got the worlds largest can of tetrosyl underseal as well just waiting for the day it'll get used on something! I remember buying it before as it dries hard rather than staying sticky - i dont like stained dogs.

I guess that'll be worth its weight for doing all the other bits around the chassis and diff's etc and take a slightly different approach on the chassis itself as you've suggested.

What rust preventive primer would you recommend out of interest? Knowing full well i wont be able to get this back to pure clean shiney metal everywhere as much as i'd love to say i can! Also - places like the spring holders, without disassembly i cant get benith that as you'd well imagine so in this instance do you just go ahead and blast some stuff on there to slow it down for now and if it arises you need to remove the spring later you'd get to it then?

Last dumb related question to your suggestion of primer and top coat, is it thin enough that it will start to bubble up like car paint does so you know to spend some attention in that area again? Bit like that bulkhead issue i dont want to potentially mask an issue i'd rather fix before paint.

Cheers,

Mark

I wouldn't use any underseal on a landrover. Anywhere.

Rust resist primer, I use Corroless, but any quality red or grey oxide should be fine. And I disassemble to paint around springs etc. It shouldn't bubble up for years if you prep properly. Rub down to good paint or metal, wash off, then apply primer and paint.

Long reply! Lots been happening but i'm a little behind on the picture front before we're back to 'current affairs'

So sit back grab a coffee and let your wifi bring in this little lot.

Another catch up pics update! I'm guessing your all bored now but hey!

Was time while i was waiting for parts to arrive (to come later) to use the best of a dry day and continue my cleaning efforts. This isn't supposed to be a show peice nor do i want it to be, my plan is just to clean inside and out best i can before tackling XYZ paint jobs like giving door hinges a fresh paint (debating black for this though) and painting grill (defo black) etc. This will be inbetween other jobs too naturally, can just start and stop cleaning as required. Its nice to know the new crud build up will be mine and not someone elses as well tbh. Previous owner wasn't dirty by any means thats not where i'm getting at.

Cracked out a firm favorite for me, the glass polish. Usually, clean glass then hit it with the polish and clean off after. Ultimately I just wanted to take the scum that's built up off the window and from here in glass cleaner will do the job.. Just a one-time bottle use and I've had this stuff for longer then i'd like to admit!

Thats i guess the 'glass update' - Note I've not done anything with the rear windows picture wise as the inside has the bars behind them so could only give the outside a clean. Well - i could clean the outside, however, i'll be getting some tint film and tinting them so didn't make sense taking it all off to put back again to just repeat that all over again. I'll be making my to-do lists and all that once i've finally caught up on these pictures! Its getting me into the habbit even if its boring for you!

AS THE PHOTO EDITS CONTINUE.. NONE OF THE TEXT IS CORRECT ANYMORE GRRRR

I'm still yet to do my to-do list and problems with my purchase and all that fun stuff. One problem I didn't expect was to see water with the truck and to be struggling to hold 50mph on the motorway as the temp guage (when it works - more on this later) is rising closer and closer to the red. This was happening as we're coming to a hill too. Great!

Quick inspection is the thermostat housing looks to be nice and clean and had been off recently compared to the rest of the stuff - Obviously this hose was soooo tight the only logical thing was to ram a screwdriver through it to get it back on.

I had a few 'wants' already with the truck and I needed to do a little reading up on proper procedures so now was a good time to order some bits for the upcoming fun! Having felt around I wanted to replace my turbo elbow (This was before I knew about the leak) as the hose was super soft and ballooning out which of course isn't ideal. While I was at that given the truck is on 136k and still original pretty much it still has its EGR fitted - This had to go. I ordered an EGR blank kit and top hose and along with the turbo elbow I bought the new lower hose to intercooler so the whole lot is pretty much replaced. Turbo hoses will go on after its all been de-gunked. Having been a soot head for quite a while in the VW scene I knew what I was going to be lurking and a search was not required here!

(post not relevant to pictures underneath anymore thanks to photo-****-it)

Done a fresh post as hopefully it goes to page 2.. Bit of an excessive upload thus far!

Let the water works begin! Top cover is off as it was 'there' and I thought I can clean that while I'm at it.

Excited I was, got the tool box out and started my strip - Then something happened which shouldn't have if procedures were followed recently!

Oh Balls! Note my elecy tape running repair to hopefully not get anymore air into the system as I needed to use the truck not long after I spotted the tear and had to await the postman.

I'll start the strip then shall I. I didn't need to use the truck for a little while and seeing the carnage after having a quick go at it I couldn't run the risk of getting all that crap in the block/pump etc. This thing hasn't been off in many years.. Fail.

And all off! I seriously wanted a manual to save my neighbours doing this. I did a fair chunk of swearing about those lower bolts and a p1ss poor design and how the balls was I going to get it out without stripping everything else off. Well of course when it was off, they were clever and it just slides up and away and I went way further with the bolts than I needed to.

Second page thing still hasn't worked so i'll do the next pics on another post in the hope it'll go over!

The offending item! Quick search for a replacement reveals many others have been hit by this (not surprised its plastic f.f.s!)

Some serious digging later (I do further clean the threads after these pictures are taken)

And by the magic of WIFI (although f you sky its cut out 3 times making 2 posts!) the postman arrives. EDIT: Even the postman arrives faster than my internet connection.

That annoyed by the situation I even messaged friends telling them to buy the brass plugs before they pick up there defenders. They have no intention of getting them but I had to spread the news.

Pfft.. a before and after shot I suppose is required?

20170818_175843_zpsqdjzos14.jpg

Of the bolts that is! Muhahahahahahaha

And new plugs fitted and hose back on.

I put the long one in the rad and the short one in the thermostat body.. Couldn't remember which way round was what but it made more sense this way. If its wrong though let me know and i'll flip them. WIll be doing a full flush through and stuff but not scared to touch it anymore.

Onto that pesky EGR - Note I pulled the vac line before the photo, wasn't driving it with it off.

What's easiest way to get to turbo actuator? Will all become clear when I take off that elbow? Also - this side of the block has SERIOUS amounts of oil build up on it, if its the rocker why would it only be one side? Its I believe from pics up top what's saturated all my sump etc and this may be my cause of oil leak on the floor.

20170819_183522_zpsnegfj9ux.jpg

And that's a high point.. This will be one messy day when I get to it! (Shortly don't panic - I have a few sleeves up my tricks)

20170819_184213_zpsdl5yxcvc.jpg

Boom - grime hidden for now.

20170819_184356_zpsrhgiv1ou.jpg

5 minutes maybe this was on the floor.. look at the crud out of that. Ewwwwww.

No cleaning was done to anything at this point, my priority was to get it 'running' to sort this engine cracking I had which I made a new post for. Think its isolated down to the aux tensioner so tomorrow i'll be picking one up and fitting that. Once that's fitted normal cleaning will resume.

Thanks for looking so far!

Ta,

Mark
