Think I've just avoided some serious damage to my Defender.
Coming off the M3 after 30 miles at 65mph I heard a bang then a rattle.
Stopped at a lay by and climbed underneath to find the front prop spider at the diff end had completely fallen to bits. eeek! The yokes have taken a bit of a bashing but other than that no harm done thankfully. Dont want to think what could have happened if it had dropped and hit the road at that speed.
Whipped the prop off and got home with diff lock engaged. Slapped a spare prop on and all is well.
At a loss as to why it would fail like that as I always grease the spiders each year and check for play. All the other spiders were changed at the same time and are still in tip top order. Just one of those things I suppose. Spiders were replaced four years ago with GKN units.
Just grateful it was not a lot worse.
