Coming back from Newbury after picking up tyres, we were on the motorway doing about 60mph. Suddenly, there was a bang and a massive grinding noise from the box.

Now recovered home. Cant get any sort of drive at all. Can put it into any gear without putting clutch in, and doesn't make any difference whether in high or low box or with difflock on. For this reason, i am confident that this isn't a halfshaft!

As i can move the transfer lever normally, i am assuming that it isnt the lt230 transfer box.

My conclusion is that the gearbox was low on oil in the first place (although was supposed to be checked by a mechanic when i bought it last friday), and has stripped the input gears. Am i right in thinking this? Has anyone had a similar problem with these??

Will be ringing a certain garage in the morning to discuss ways forward with this as i dont think it is unreasonable to expect that a car you have paid top whack for to work after a week of ownership!

To be continued . . .

any advice greatly welcomed with regards to the gearbox diagnosis

Car sold to you has turned out to be NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE, and you are entitled to cash back, or full repairs to a decent standard (re-con gearbox at least) at their expense, AND they probably owe you a courtesy car in the meantime.

Try asking them nicely but firmly, and it that doesn't work see a lawyer, all on Monday.

Handy i work in the legal field then! Albeit prison!!

Have checked trading standards and i am covered luckily.

After a bit of research- could this be a clutch explosion?

Yes it could, but as Wiltshire says, why guess?

As 4th gear is direct drive, and you say you can't get that gear, the possibilities are fewer but still, who cares?

Let us all know what the response from the seller is.

I cant get any gear- i had to double de-clutch 4th when it was working!

Wasn't really bothered about that though at the time.

I can have engine running and get any gear i want- it just wont move when i do!!

Grrrrrr

Layshaft?

Correct me If I am wrong but isn't 4th gear in the LT77 gearbox DIRECT from the input shaft to the 3rd motion shaft WITHOUT involving the laygears?

I am not yet persuaded, but if they fix it - job done!

Hey grumbleweed, had the same prob with my lt77 sept last year it sounds exactly the same as mine, it will probably be the rear splines on the main shaft of the gear box where they mate with the transfer box drive gear, its a known fault on the lt77, you will probably need both replacing, thing is you dont know they're foooooked till they give up on ya, or unless you remove the inspection plate on the back of the transfer box.

No just the drive gear for the transfer box and the main shaft of the gearbox, will post pics of my gear and main shaft and diagrams from my workshop manual if i can figure it out

heres a few pics grumbleweed
1st is t'knackered shaft
2nd t'new shaft fitted back in the 'box
3rd t'knackered transfer gear, this slides over the end of the main shaft and is located behind the circular panel to the left of the transmission brake in pic 4.

Trust me the transfer gear internals are as battered as a hamburg whores' chuff too,
The transfer gear went at the same time as its splined to the shaft, it's relatively cheap fix to mine was 356quid.

taken the box out- old oil was burned to hell.

Turns out there was too little oil in the unit!!

New one going in is lovely though!! 30k on it.
