Quick question.

If I fitted a good secondhand cross drilled item, what would I do about the bearing preload?

Will the replacement item just slot in and the preload be more or less the same or is it a bit of a ball ache to sort out?

you need to check it ,but as long as its not loose ie end float and not too tight that its difficult to turn by hand it will be ok shimming is behind bearing race in bearing plate ,either plate or cross drill sorts the lube issue ,but as said plate needs thread cutting off main shaft

ok cool thanks - one thing though, i have offered up the oil feed plate and it fits without having to cut anything off. I am not sure what bit you mean me to cut off? When i ordered it from ashcrofts i gave them my box serial number. Are the oil feed plates different?

My lt230 has the spoked bit for fitting to PTO devices. My understanding was the threaded but of the oil feed plate goes inside this and the 'threads' spin the oil into the splines, like a crude pump

Ashcroft are fast. I only ordered yesterday and its here already!!

EDIT: went to fit and once its in place i cant get the PTO cover back on, it stands proud by about 3mm now due to what looks like a 'core plug' type bung in the middle - i have knocked this out. Any one see any reason why i can reassemble it with the dished bit facing in to the box to give me the clearance?

Have cleaned it up (its in the dishwashed now shhhh...) and will reassemble with a smear of RTV sealant on the plug

I'm looking at the same thing. I pulled the PTO cover off but was a bit worried about pulling out the gear to have a full look....can you just pull it out?

yep, might take a wiggle to get it out but i will just come, dont force it though, it should slide out nicely

PTO cover and rear bearing cover have to be off.having main and transfer box in neutral helps.

And mark them up, they only fit one way and its not obvious lying on your back. When I stripped mine out I obviously didn't mate the splines as they were and found the clonk gone when next driving it.
Soon came back though....
Mines been clonkink around 5 yrs now, just drive sympathetic!

If you renew the gear with a cross drilled one or an oil thrower for early box's you can increase the life of your box ****

Tell you what, I am going to be ripping the boxes out to do the clutch soon - will whip the gear out and have a look at the splines rises if it has worn more with the oil plate in over the last few years
