Right, Got Me One Of These On The Landy, 9LT230T Transfer Box) Apparently It's Perm 4WD, Is This True? Or Is The Haynes Wrong On This One? Just Wondering Cos Might Have Been "Mis-Informed" By The Lanc Fella That Sold Me It

Aye it's permanent 4. It has 2 ratios Hi and Lo with the ability to lock the differential to make both axles turn at the same speed.

Yupp Thats The One Lol, =] Bloke That Sold Me It Said Twas Rear Wheel Drive Due To 4x4 Being Disengaged Etc, But When I Looked At My Lil Stick Couldnt See How It Would Do It, Just Had My High/Low/Neut, And Diff Lock. Just Wanted To Check That I Wasnt Being Stupid And Didnt Know How To Knock 4x4 Off. Cheers =]

It amazes me the amount of people who think defenders are selectable 4wd. How can people own a vehicle without knowing how it works? Surely people do just a teeny bit of research into what they're about to buy or how can they know if it works properly?

Oh no, let's not git into the one wheel, two wheel drive thing again!

For the purpose of explaining that 2wd/4wd isn't selectable to someone what's bin told that it is let's not confoose things!

I Have Done A Teeny Bit Of Research Into What I Was Getting, And Generally Know How It Works, But If I'm Told Something By The Bloke Who Has Been Maintaining It And Restoring It That Contradicts The Haynes Stuff Then I Am Generally Inclined To Believe The Bloke. Not Everythings Standard, All Parts Are Interchangeable. There Are Landys Which Are Selectable 2W/4W Drive, Seen A Few When I Was Looking For Mine (Tisnt A Defender Btw, Tis Just A Ninety, All Depends Which Transfer Box You Decide To Fit.

Cheers For All Your Input Though :) Appreciate The Speedy Replys

Think you need to do some more research.

Basically if it's coil sprung it's perm 4wd and if it's leaf sprung it's selectable. Wasn't having a dig at you btw more at the bloke who sold it you bull****ting.

Not really true to say you can change transfer box to make it perm 4wd or vice versa. If you put an lt230 onto a series (dunno if it would fit) you'd destroy the transmission due to no cv joints in the front axle, so you'd have to put a defender type axle in which wouldn't fit due to being designed for coil springs not leaf.
