All of a sudden when driving my transer box jumped out of gear and will not go back into hi or low range.

It just makes a horrible noise.

Have taken the transmission tunnel off and the gear linkage looks ok good movement but where it goes into the transfer box the link hardly moves. Lubricated everything. Same problem.

Any simple suggestions or is it a case of a re conditioned gear box?

cheers

bushes wear in links , have you tried levering linkage with screwdriver or something. had similar on disco and just needed plastic bushes

tried moving the linkage where it goes into the gear box with screwdriver hammer and pliers it only moves around 15 degress.

could try jack up and get someone to turn a wheel as you lever link. or if he`s about try and get hold of james martin

one other question, is there still oil in the box? Mine ran out of oil too and started to make horrible sounds too, squeeling sounds. Also the hi/low wasn't working.

that would do it ,once diff bearings wear or collapse selector for hi/lo will jam

Hi,

had a chance to jack up a wheel and it seems to go into gear in the transfer box with no problems, diff lock is working well.

However with the main gearbox in neutral and the clutch out there is the horrible noise again. Am now thinking the problem is in the R380 gear box and not the transfer box?

any thoughts?

Gearbox out after a lot of head scratching turns out to be a failed clutch the center was spinning but only noticable with load on the gear box.

Big thank you for ashcroft gear boxes for thier phone call to help me work it out
