Hi all,

I have spent 2 days, without much success, researching the best jizz to use to re-seal my transfer boxes. It appears to be a later one, using sealant instead of gaskets and has many weeps, leaks and drips.
The box was fitted in haste last week and I will have to remove it again to fix the leaks. I’m fine with that but I don’t want to do the job only to have it still waz it’s contents all over the place!
To that end, I would love a definitive, verified answer to the question,

which is the best sealant / gasket maker to use to reseal the mating faces on the transfer box?”

Preferably from someone who has actually done the job and achieved success!

I don’t want to go back to gaskets because:

A - they’re crap too.
B - I don’t really want to go through the box resetting preloads etc to account for the gaskets.

The internet is awash with all sorts of contradictions and “x is better than y” but no explanation given as to why. My heads buzzing!

Cheers,

Rich

just get a cartridge of oil resistant black silicone sealant ,just ensure mating surfaces are clean and dry ie wiped over by brake clean or thinners etc first

Thankyou, JM! :)
It appears I may be over-thinking this job! Just don’t want to make a habbit if removing the transfer box!

Yamabond 4 or Threebond 1194 - these sealed a classic triumph's crank cases, now that's a challenge I can tell you.

i build a lot and i pay about a fiver a cartridge and as long as surfaces are oil free ie the brake clean theres no issues also apply some to the threads of bolts that dont have blind holes

I don't do much drive train component rebuilding these days. However when I do, I use this stuff.

Thanks folks!

Can I just ask one more question?

Do you let the goo skin over before assembly or just slap it on and bolt it up tight?

Cheers again,
Rich
