Hi.

I have a question for you guys that has been rattling around in my head for some weeks now.
I am going to buy a discovery 1 in a few months time for pieces. (Axles, engine, everything) and because my land rover 90 has drums on the back, i would like to replace them with discs. But, do i need to replace the whole axle, or can i replace everything from the stub axle? What would need to be done? Long story short, can i take the discs from a discovery 1 and put them on to the original axle (that had drums on it)? Would it all work out or not?
Thanks

Why not just put the whole axle on as this would give you 24 spline shafts instead of 10 and would be much simpler

Stupid question but what's the advantage of 24 spline over 10? Stronger and better wear pattern?

I don't WANT to replace the axle, because it has been restored.
I personally do not mind about 10 spline to 24 spline, if i have to, i will just put the differential on to the restored casing, but if i can avoid it i will.

no don't think you can. but you can buy the parts to swap a drum to disc iirc. costs a bit mind

If axle has been restored why are you wanting to change, good condition drums are fine on the back and in my opinion less trouble to maintain[seen many rusty seized rear calipers]and new slave cylinders for drums much cheaper than a set of calipers. But do fit quality parts.

Just swapped my axle the other day from a old 12sp to a discovery rear end. Straight swap. Been good so far. Did but on new brakes and bearings too though.

The axle casing on the disc brake version has lugs at either end to bolt the calliper to. I don't think the drum braked one has these. So that might be a bit of a handicap!
