How does the series cope with the 200/30 tdi engines?
Will the braking, staring systems be good enough?

the wiring for the starter may need to be replaced or extended depending where your selenoid is my selenoid was already fitted to the centre of the bulkhead so wasn't really a problem and you will need to wire the glow plugs up but there are a few different ways of doing it but i only wired up mine 18 months later due to the really bad weather we had but generaly you won't need to use them as they normally start up well in cold weather without using the glow plugs.

the series landy will cope well with the 200 tdi engine fitted provided the gearbox is in very good con'd aswell as the axles, when i decided to fit a tdi engine to mine i hadn't long done a full restoration on the landy so axles and gearbox was already done and two new prop shafts and rear half shafts fitted aswell but you can do all that as you go along, you will need an o/d if you havn't already got one and std diffs will be ok provided they are ok.

you don't have to but i would strongly advise you to fit 11" brakes on the front rather than the std 10" brakes, ok the car will be lighter with the tdi fitted and although the car will go a little bit faster than fitted with a std engine you will be going faster through the gears hope this helps.

....as an owner of many v8's including "Margo" my fab Stage 1 109 and my current wheels......i think the TDI is the right choice....next door neighbour has run his 110 on "free" unwanted what ever type of oil for nearly five years now.

i would definitely go with diesel now, i have been running lpg since about 2003 on a volvo, i fitted my own system then and it was at the time 35 pence per litre, i am still running a 3ltr volvo now and the price has just about doubled, i plan on selling the volvo in april and putting my 1963 landy on the road, as you can run this on part cooking oil.
I dont think it is worth investing money into lpg anymore

OK.
I have definitely come round to the idea that diesel is going to be best.
I now need to know if i can get a decent 200 or 300TDI fitted for a grand or so, or is that too much to ask.
Also, who would undertake the work?

oh and ring around a few independent Land Rover garages and ask for a price.

For the bits i do need a garage for i've used Harvey Taylor Vehicle Management in Derby - 01332 386 507. Chap called Ian owns the place

Not in any way linked with the garage or anything, just purely a name and number to get you started - they may be able to help you out.

a mate of mine was looking to do this and asked a local landrover expert when i was there, he quoted around £500 - £600 for the fitting, so i would think a thousand should cover the fitting and any replacement part fitting etc that needs to be done.

i am just in the process of fitting a defender 200tdi into my series 3. apart from swapping engine mounts over its been nice and simple all the wires in the series loom are the same as the ones from the defender engine one so wiring has been as easy as can be. i might be abit far away to come help but i am happy to offer what advice i can and plenty of photos of what i have done thus far :)

Ive been running lpg and my series 3 for 3 years without any problems. It cost the same in fuel now on long runs as my wifes 1.4 clio.
Mush easier to fix the kit than change the engine. Cost me £425 for the full kit and fitted it over the weekend. Never had any problems with the insurance company or MOT's.
I did read last year some time that LPG is now linked to the cost of unleaded so it will go up pence by pence in line with unleaded. From what the paper said this would still mean lpg should stay around half the cost of unleaded. I have friend who live in the country and dont have any mains gas supply. They have LPG for heating and cooking, from talking to them the government would have to increase the duty on all LPG. This cause a real hardship for peaple using lpg as a heating fuel and this could be in our favour as autogas users.

i can only tell you my experiece of LPG which is that it works fantastically on my series 2a, power is the same as on petrol but it's a lot quieter on gas. As others have mentioned the lpg tank takes up some room in the back but it's never got in my way. I'm currently paying 72.9 per litre the only down size is that i can only get it from a 1 garage within 20 miles of me who are only open mon to sat 8 till 5. The system is easy to fit and means you get to keep your vehicle more original with the correct engine.
