Has anybody had any experience of cylinder head problems when converted to lpg - be great to run on gas but not if I cook the head!! is it myth or a nasty problem!!

I had a 4.6 that had problems with the head ,this may have been through using lpg, but the smaller blocks may be alright, check with eightinavee, he is a man that knows.bob

i have 96 4.6 hse on lpg, no probs to report here. engine recently rebuilt and old heads gave no reason for concern after 15000 miles on lpg.

Thanks redrange, I'm thinking of buying an 02/52 plate for conversion to lpg so I think its a different engine to yours. It's my 1st Ranger and I wanna get it right so any info on lpg and the (I think) BMW engine would be gratefully received.

would that be a mk3? it is a different engine, BMW V8, very good i hear.
the late P38's had a different set up from 1999 i think, a different engine management system and this is noticeable by an inlet manifold that looks like a bunch of banana's. a few more horses but a bit less torque on the 4.0 and 4.6's
p.s.
i love lpg wouldn't have a r/r without it, 12 mpg on a good day gord blimey guvnor!!! and i have an old supra turbo (one of 4 cars in total) that drinks like a fish, 140 miles on a tank full if your enjoying yourself, a tank full=£60 aswell, and they want to tax 4x4s! look at the bloody fuel duty we pay, were supporting the country single handed, all of us.

If you want an 02 on RR get a TD6 with good history, its a much better engine than the 4.4v8 plus you wont get shafted for an LPG system that is very difficult to get right in this application. With a TD6 you can buy it,drive it,go in any garage to fuel it up,go through the channel tunnel, keep your spare tyre, have no insurance hassles,an accurate fuel gauge and not have to put up with LPGA certificates that mean nothing.
Few LPG systems are correctly fuelling the engine they are fitted to,mostly because little care or understanding is taken in setting them up,plus with an engine and cooling system as complex as the 4.4v8 in a RR hardly any of the systems are capable of decent fuelling in all driving conditions.

Nice one eightinavee!! Thats it then sack the lpg idea...I'll look out for a TD6 .. any down side I should look out for!!
