Both my lower ball joint haters have split and noticed when was jacked up checked other joints that they started to creak slightly . So looks luke 4 x new ball joints .

My question is I have seen the ball joint g clamp style tool but from what heard the do bend and I hear the LR joints are is there efin tight ! So for those who have done this job before any hints and tricks , I will also put new halfshat seals on too .

Cheers

The only advice I'd give is don't buy a cheap g cramp tool. I bought a Cromwells one that did the job ok.

I thought of another way . Weld up a rectangle frame from 2 " box with triangulation bits in corners but have a tube the length of the ball joint which is just slightly bigger than the joint sat inside the frame and under the joint then another tube to sit on the joint and a 5 tone bottle jack before top of the frame .

Feasible idea ?

I got my 4 into 1 G Clamp for £25!!!! Via ebay! Still have it ready for the next time when needed?
That's to say I had no probs using it the first time! That's not to say it may not do the next time? But I have seen very expensive G Clamps fail when removing those things!!!

Expect a couple of hours of Blood, Sweat and Tears!

There are a few good videos of the Garage of Google/YouTube to see before if needed with good advise?

Happy Ball Joint Removal:cool::(:D

Not doing it yet as it's just the boots that's gone . So I can wait till the weather is warmer. I will replace with leformder ball joints .

you usually find when you release the knuckle from the ball joints one will have play

Yes I thought that would be the case . My steering is a tad vague. But I have found 2 of the track rod ends one on front and other on back of axle which fitted into tube click slightly while jacked up and a assistant rock the steering with your hand on the joints . I was going to replace with HD kit . Tyres are a month old also. Steering box has less than a inch of free play.

I'm going to say the lower joints are not helping though

i use a hollow cylinder jack to press both out, once they have pressure whack the the end of the yoke that shocks the the hold on the joint

Good idea, was doing some fetling on mine today and by the time I got indoors!! Hands and fingers were a bit numb!! Even though the sun was out !

With a good (i.e. safe) G clamp and adapters, the ball joints will come out no problem albeit with substantial force but no hammering or heat should be required. I used a Neilsen Ball Joint Removal / Installation Service Kit (CT1949) which has the right adapters for both upper and lower ball joints. When I did mine, the hardest part was undoing the nuts, which was basically impossible. So I ended up cutting the ball joint stud with an angle grinder. Just make sure you don't cut through the collet when your'e doing this on the lower ball joint.

I have a small air 90⁰ grinder if that's the case . Or a nut splitter may work .

Just wondering is there any point using LR half shaft seals ?

If they're not leaking already, I don't think you should replace them as they don't experience any kind of fluid pressure where they are. Just go easy when you remove and install the drive shaft and keep it centered so the seal won't get deformed. Giving the drive shaft a little bit of lubrication before re-installing would also help. If you need to replace them, use LR. Once I was foolish enough to replace one with a BritPart and it lasted 2 months ! With LR, install and forget.

I did both sides in 4hours. It was a PITA but at least it's done. All I can say is use lots of presoaking with penetrating oil, a proper ball joint kit, an impact gun (I didn't have one at the time) and a lot of swearing.

Got impact guns at work but not the compressor to drive them at home. Only issue is I can't park on drive to strip both out . One side then turn vehicle around , so bit harder to clean up and pre soak
