My Defender 1999 TD5 struggles to stay in low range, in fact I have to hold it in place and it still jumps out.

Any suggestions as to what the issue is.

At the same time, my diagnostics says that the vehicle is in low range when it is actually in high range, what could cause this, does it affect the mapping of the ECU at all?

Yes it does effect mapping.

Likely need a new TX box!

Surely taking a look at the linkage and switch is a first option.

Does the diagnostic change from Low to Hi when you move the lever to Low range?

Not sure how high tech they got by 1999 but pretty sure the basic mechanicals are the same.

You need to adjust the linkage for the HI LOW range.
There is a known software issue and this makes diagnostics read incorrectly if you see HI when you put it into LOW do not worry everything is OK.

It does change, but only part way through the travel, when it reaches High Range physically, it displays 'LOW RANGE" in the diag software.
Somewhere along the travel of the lever it jumps to "HIGH RANGE" but only momentarily.
