That's an oil catch tank thing for the breather system. Some **** owned this Landy before for sure - Captain Bodge springs to mind.

So the round thing is the air filter then. Odd that they have the blue thing, and the cyclone filter.
 
Hmmm. The guy i brought it from told me it was a 200tdi conversion. So a bit confused now . But it did get me home after a 3 hour drive with no probs lol.
 
200 would have the turbo sticking up on the right

If you look at the front of yours, the single belt drives the water pump, pas, and alternator. Its a flat belt.

I think that a new cyclone filter is about ten or fifteen pounds, and its a dead simple job to change one.

Personally, id try changing it, and seeing if you still need the catch tank. You shouldnt unless the engine is a bit sick.
 
You say you know nothing about cars ! Well you have at least the sense to ask unlike the T*** that owned it before you.
 
Dont make the chap feel bad! Its a messy conversion, but it might run forever like that! : )
 
Its not bad it just needs the engine bay tidying up ! But First things first get an oil change an timing belt change as would not trust its been done properly
 
Timing belt is easy enough to DIY, but requires a few tools. If youre ever going to do another, its worth buying the tools, and diying, however, if its likley to only be the one, you may as well just pay someone else to do the job.
 
Very appeciative of all the feedback. Will be planning to to bits and bobs myself as would like to learn all things defender wise. So are you saying if i change the air filter for a discovery one. Then i wouldnt need the blue thing. Plus the bonnet may close better?
 
No.

The 300tdi rocker cover is vented through a cyclone filter (the black thing stuck on the drivers side of the head)
The cyclone takes the oil out of the 'gas', and drains the oil back to the sump.

There is very slight negative pressure supplied by the air system. This also feeds the 'gas' back into the combustion stream, so as any remaining oil vapor is burnt up.

If the cyclone is knackered, oil will be lost through that port. Or if the engine is breathing too much for the cyclone to cope with.

This is why the chap has added the blue thing - to try and catch any additional oil.

This may be that the rings / bores are gone, or it may just be as he couldnt be bothered to replace a £10 cyclone filter. There's no telling without trying.

But, as above, its the least of your worries really - do the cam belt first.
 
Cam belt will probably cost you about £150 ish, for someone else to do it. Full kit of parts is probably about £60.
Need to check that the crank sprocket is the correct (later) type before ordering the kit. If you do some searches, youll learn what i mean.

Tools for doing the belt yourself -
Timing kit with pullers (about £25)
Locking tool (about £60 - for an overpriced spanner thing!)
"Needle" type torque wrench that youll not really use for other stuff (£15)

Then the £60 or so for the timing belt, tensioner, sprocket (if required) etc.

Been looking yp the 200 and 300. It all says that the 300 dipstick is on the front of the engine.. and on the 200 it is on the side. Is mine definatley a 300? (Mine is on the side)

No the water pump/stat housing and dip stick location are all 200 type/positions. It's a 200TDI.

The photos could lead people to confusion as the photos are fairly tight in on certain parts of the engine bay rather than the engine.

Your's will still have a cyclone breather so advise above is still sound.
 
Heres couple more picks. Confised as somebody said it was a 300 because a 200 would have a turbo on the right above the engine.
