Started the Landy the other day after it had sat for about 2 hours, and there was one hell of a screeching sound from under the bonnet, definately sounded like it was related to the belts or something driven by them.
Shut it off, opened the bonnet, re-started, no sound, sweet as a nut... hmmm.
Drove off and everything was fine, TD4's done about 90k.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this, it sounded so loud as if one of the pulleys had siezed, engine didn't seem particulary loaded up though, changed the belts about a year ago for good quality Gates items. Over the Xmas break I'll try and get it in the garage, get the belts off and feel all the bearings etc, I'll post the outcome if there is one...
Any suggestions in the mean times appreciated...

Replace belts and tensioners.

had the same on my td4 this summer. It turned out to be the main crankshaft pully. its got a rubber mount thingy inside and it packed up. It had to be the dearest pully of course.

yeah .. but only after filling the screen wash 'n some spilled over
must have landed on a belt ..
screech stopped after a few seconds

Cat, now dead

You say that, we once had a big ginger cat that used to sleep on top of the engine when we got home, proper heat junky, popped the bonnet one day and found its fur on the insulation as evidence.... how the dam thing never got minced i'll never know!!!!

Cheers for the input guys, I'll post any findings, interesting what was said about the starter motor too, isn't to say it didn't get stuck in....

The solenoid had been repaired. It seems that sometimes it didn't fully disengage from the engine and thus the loud, scary, expensive sounding screeching noise
