Farnborough, Hants mate
Thats a shame - just moved from near there (Woking) and I used to work there (Cody Technology Park) - to the other side of Wiltshire.....

Diagnostics would be the way to go first to see why the HDC is out, this is usually because of either and ABS issue or an EAS (Air Suspension) issue....sometimes the headlamp leveling ECU can also drag the CAN down and cause HDC/ABS/EAS issues too.

So the new battery has cured nothing, every other time it clears the errors, does that odd gear thing then HDC inactive appears

I have noticed I am also loosing power steering a bit, sometimes hard sometimes not :(

Steering issues - could be low fluid level, pump on its way out...or more commonly, the Servotronic Valve in the rack.

I am thinking it could be ABS related as the HDC uses the ABS system to function....diagnostics is the first step.

Maybe not connected? Have you checked fluid for power steering? Start with the simple things and then go look for the wallet ;)

Ooops Saint got there before me.

He also said my Power steering was heavy as hell

Yes....if a speed sensor is duff, it will fault out the ABS/HDC/EAS systems.

Oh are they easy to change/ fix/ get to?
Easy to get to - depending on if they were fitted using the correct 'grease' they can be a sod to get out though...I was lucky with mine, some deft levering and swearing and it came out.....others have reported having to drill the little sods out!
