Hi all.need some advice.my wife was driving my 300 tdi disco and lost drive,not sure what gearbox it is.but reverse is under 5th gear.anyway clutch feels fine,goes in and out of gear,you can also select gear without the clutch (engine running of course).but when you press the clutch down there a horrible grating noise from gearbox.not sure if its clutch or gearbox.first thing I checked was that she she didnt knock it out of hi box.

try engaging diff lock it will rule in/out broken diff ,halfshaft, cv etc,but could also be many other things like clutch failure, g/box ,t/box , you can drian some oil out of boxes and look for signs of failure /contamination

That's was one of the first things I did was put it into diff lock still wouldn't drive,sack her sounds like a plan lol

Does the gearbox have an inspection plate on the bell housing

There is a plate on the bottom of the bellhousnig you can unbolt, which gives some access to the flywheel

Been under it for an hour,undo bolt but can't move the plate.grrrr lol

you wont as there isnt one, have you checked oil ?

Drained the transfer box oil.oil is like new as only changed that 4 months ago.no bits in it

you dont need to drain it all just a cup full

Ok will drain a abit out of gearbox tonight.
