Hi Everyone,

Just had a call from my other half just to tell me " I've broke down "

Apparently she has just come off the M5 onto the island and lost all drive.

I have had a look to see what the possible causes could be and possible repairs

but I think it looks like I might have to source another gearbox.

If that is the case where is the best place to get one from ?

Is worth going for a used one or going for a re-furbed one?

The motor is D2 auto.

Before you spend any money, make sure the transfer box is in gear. It's not at all unknown for it to drop out.

what makes you think its gear box ? was there any rattling noise previous other symptoms

Defo check transfer box I had that happen this weekend I hadn't put it in high right after moving the lever to fit a new gaiter.

Could be a front or rear diff gone,D2 has open centre diff(if no difflock fitted) so would lose drive if one fails,Mine was like that when I bought it as a non runner.

Thanks for the advice on that Dave I tried that when I got there and got it moving slowly but still didn't feel right. There was a lot of vibration when I selected drive and reverse gears.

that could be torque converter drive plate

Thanks for the reply. The only other symptom she had was it was rather sluggish
on acceleration lots of power from the engine but very slow in changing gear at one point when she left work it took about six miles before top gear was selected

Any oil in the box?

still would fit but check oil colour as well by draining some out

Thank you all for your replies and advice I appreciate it.
I'll do some checking tomorrow and let you know what I find

So far I have flushed the gearbox out twice and then went for a test drive.

There was very little in there but plenty of sludge anyway flushed it out twice then took it out for a good run.

Started off quite sluggish and hardly any acceleration but by changing gear manually going from D to 3-2-1 and then 1-2-3-D a few times it started to get better, once it started to smooth out I hit the Sport Mode button and give it a bit of workout which seemed to smooth things out a little more.

I'll give it a few more days of normal driving and do another flush and refill just to make sure.

Thanks again for all the advice I've received
