I have a Freelander and when I accelerate it seems to not want to go above 2000 rpms. When it does, or when the engine is put under the least stress (going up the slightest incline etc) i lose power and get white smoke out the exhaust. Any ideas?

Ooer, it sounds like either a blown turbo unit or a headgasket leak, either way you don't want to be running it without a proper check-up.

p.s. which engine/model is it?

Before you drive it any more, CHECK THE COOLANT LEVEL!!

If it has leaked the head gasket, that's one thing, and easily enough replaced; but if you continue driving with low coolant you may destroy the whole engine for keeps by extreme overheating.

Take care.

Check the oil too, for signs of water or slimy dirty white emulsion on the dipstick. Those would indicate head gasket failure.

1, has the coolant level changed in expansion tank ?

2, are you sure you havent filled up with contaminated fuel ?

Sounds like the hose to the intercooler is damaged. I had same problem, changed hose which cost about £20 and no problem since.
