Hello,

I have a Disco 2 TD5 V Reg at 95k miles. Recently it has started losing nearly all power, over heating to just below red line and then staying there about a minute then temp falls back down to normal and power returns.

It does happen to any sort of pattern or time or anything like that, completely random most of the time.

Any advice will be greatly welcomed,

Thanks

Kevin

My first thought is the coolant temperature sensor/plug/wiring... cos the coolant has a big thermic inertia...it's temperature can't rise or drop suddenly.... the gauge gets inputs from this sensor and it is part of the engine management too.

Yes, i'm quoting u from the workshop manual(RAVE):

The ECT sensor is located in the coolant outlet elbow on the top of the engine. It provides the ECM with engine coolant temperature information. The ECM uses this ECT information for the following functions:
l Fuelling calculations.
l Temperature gauge.
l To limit engine operation if coolant temperature is too high.
l Cooling fan operation.
l Glow plug operating time.
The ECT works as an NTC sensor. As temperature rises, the resistance in the sensor decreases, as temperature decreases, the resistance in the sensor increases. The ECM compares the voltage signal to stored values and compensates fuel delivery to ensure optimum driveability at all times.

In the event of component failure the ECM calculates coolant temperature from the fuel temperature sensor signal. If this occurs, the limit engine operation if coolant temperature is too high becomes inoperative.

I hope this helps

U must try this first cos it's the most obvious... let's hope it will cure it cos the gauge gets the inputs from this sensor via the ECM(engine ECU) ... if u see what i mean:eek:

Hi,
How did you get on with changing the coolant temperature sensor?

I currently have exactly the same symptoms on my disco and was wondering if it was worth changing the sensor for new. Wasn't sure if I would have had lights on the dash to tell me of a fault or not.

Anyone else have or had these symptoms?

Thanks

Ali
