Hi Guys
Yesterday whilst driving along had a little problem. Defender 90 TD5 2.0L Yreg

Was keeping up with the traffic at about 70 :eek: and after a few miles pulled off on a country lane to go walk the dog. All was fine.

After the walk we headed for home. Driving along and pulled off the main road and noticed that there was a slight loss of power. Though I was in too high a gear. Changed down all was fine, picked up speed but then the power failed.

No Bangs, No lumpiness just loss of power. Changed down and down but still nothing. Then it stalled.

Started up fine and ticked over. Pulled away but very slowly in first with hardly any acceleration. It would tic over fine, but if I accelerated the exhaust started to smoke. Engine sounded fine, temp fine, oil level half way to full, water level fine, fan running, sounded really lovely - just would not pull away. Eventually a friend arrived with tow rope, but he spoke to his brother who knows a little bout landies and his brother said do not tow it at all. If you can drive it home, do so.
:( So off we went. Drove about 5 miles in first at oooo 3 miles per hour because it would not go any faster and the smoke turned from light brown to black, to the point where people had to put their lights on to pass lol.

Anyhoo eventually it stopped driving along, and does not stay started once started if you know what I mean. But at least now its in a safe place.

Well like I said checked the:

Oil - Fine
Water - Fine
Fuel - Fine
Fan Belt - fine
Battery - obviously fine (it started enough times)
Fuel pump whirs and gurgles when ignition turned without starting
Unplugged the red plug on the ECU (at friends brothers advice - no change)
Clutch worked fine, was able to go through the gears

Now as it got worse it got painfully slow, to the point where I got out and walked alongside it pushing to help it up the hills.

I suspect either the exhaust has a potato in it or something significant has happened.

I know the black smoke means unburnt fuel. I mean it was like a bloody oil rig going up there was so much. But it really seemed as if it was suffocating. The engine got warm but the temp gauge never even budged off the middle position. I know if I take it to a garage first they are going to say - NEW TURBO - but as I never rag it I doubt that, but I am in your hands.

Ah yes there is one other thing - it has been belching blue smoke after start up, when I get to about third, I lift my foot off the accelerator and it emits quite a stream of blue smoke for about a hundred yards then it stops and does not do it again until I Begin driving again later in the day. I know that screams injectors, but the oil level hasn't been going up nor losing any. So dunno.

sounds more like a problem/restriction in the air intake side of things to me. Check for a split or delaminated turbo hose, turbo pipe blown off, air filter blocked or sucked into air intake, split intercooler etc. It could also be a faulty EGR valve. If you check all of this and it's all ok then try unplugging yer maf sensor. My money is on it being a turbo hose fault or EGR valve jammed. On the grounds you were booting it at the time turbo hose is top of the list.
 
Cheers ratty - Like i said it feels like its gasping for air and cause everything is working fine otherwise, I thought the same. I did take the snorkel connector off so the air went straight into the air filter and the air filter looked clean etc but it still did the same . . . but I do remember thinking that it looked like the filter was sitting further down than when I inspected it. I'll have another good look round. Much obliged for the advice. I was very ****ed off lol to say the least. But what your saying makes sense. I just need to look harder. Again thank you - I have hope again lol

Oh no, mine has just done this, going along at 75mph then power dropped and couldn’t get above 40mph, then came the smoke when I tried to accelerate. please god let it only be a hose, I’m panicking that I might need a new turbo, only had it 14 weeks

Impressive feat of thread resurrection! :)

Wouldn't panic about the turbo just yet, that could be caused by quite a few things.

Haha, well what can I say, resurrection is obviously my specialty . I’m hoping for a cheaper fix, I’ve checked hose and can’t see any holes or tears. Smoking bad, it’s silver, the rear end is now black

Nothing wrong with a bit of black. Just get your self a no smoke no poke bumper sticker and pretend you are rolling coal in a big pick up in the southern states :D

On a more serious note you need to check the indiesd of the hoses as well and the external condition. As the op found the inside was delaminating without the hose puncturing.
