It seems a bad place to put the pump in the tank, perfect for getting crud in there when you remove it!
Submersible tank pumps are standard on pretty much all modern cars. It keeps pump noise down and the fuel keeps the pump cool, increasing working life.

Mine was down on power, wouldn't rev out, wouldn't do over 50mph. Quite scary on the M6...

I'd spilled some oil topping it up and it went down one of the plug holes, it did eventually sort itself but I replaced the 2 plug leads and now take more care topping up
 
Thanks to everyone for your help, it was greatly appreciated. So for an update, I put in a Landy fuel filter at a cost of £43 and so far so good, seems to be running a treat, fingers well and truly crossed.
